Offensive License Plates

So it seems like a California Judge may have invalidated Cali's offensive personalized license plate rule stating that it violates free speech because it cannot be held to an evenly applied standard. Probably bad paraphrasing so here is a link to an article:
https://www.courthousenews.com/judg...medium=website&utm_content=link&ICID=ref_fark

So it states at the end that DMV is going over the ruling and deciding what to do. Do you think they will let you now put whatever on your personalized plates or take the douche option and say you know what you can no longer have the personalized plates because it is not a right but a privilege?

I have been rejected.

BUDTARD for my Husky for one. Another one or two as well.
I tried to explain is it for my Motard and my name is Bud. Nope.

Interested to see all the rejections. :laughing

BARF has pretty low standard for user names. :p

They should get rid of personalized plates. The 1a prevents the gov't from restricting our freedom of speech, but the 1a isn't a tool to help us promote our speech. This problem is what happens when you want freedom and don't realize you're dealing with assholes. If you're not prepared to have NGRFKR plates running around town, then just stop with trying to give dumb people nice things.

I think they are fun.. so NO. :teeth

Keep such as you posted off a plate for sure as hate speech, but a defined standard vs a submit and wait to find out if some clerk is going to accept it is not a good protocol.

The only reason the state offers custom license plates is because they clearly make good money on them. I'm sure they will figure out a new protocol that allows them to continue to get extra money.

But hate speech is protected speech. So if it's a 1a argument, then it's a no brainer that you have to allow it.

I was rejected for MIEATER. I appealed and explained that it meant Mile Eater and they relented. I never followed through with actually ordering the plate.

I guess for the Government application that is true. Sure is not for a lot of places though.

Common sense needs to be more common. :p

So ridiculous. Either allow anything or nothing.

In Canada a dude wans't allowed his legal, born, last name because it could be "offensive".

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova...nment-regulations-removal-last-name-1.4037912

Mr. Grabher wants his licence plate back.

A Dartmouth man is furious that after 25 years the Nova Scotia Registry of Motor Vehicles has cancelled his personalized licence plate with his last name Grabher on it, following a single complaint.

Offensive is an opinion, not a fact. I saw a license plate that said Mr. Slow, that might be offensive to under-intelligent people.

I got rejected "for being too close to another plate" or something.

As if they don't use consecutive numbered plates already.
BS

I wish it were too. Best case scenario is you have the freedom to do whatever you want and you only want good things. The number of restrictions we have is directly proportional to who we are. If you think we have too many restrictions, then you also think we're too shitty. There's just no getting around it while keeping a foot on the ground.

Who gets to decide what is offensive?

Can the government censor your paperwork because someone might be offended your name is Shitty McFuckface?

One can spend a lot of time finding solutions to problems that don't exist. A person can't change their name to something obscene, so that solves the license plate issue for Mr. McFuckface.
