Now that the season is half over, how do you feel about Moto2?

OK.

So half season of Moto2 racing is over. What are everybody's opinions of this new series at this point?

From the beginning, I didn't care if the bikes were slower or faster than 250s or World Supersport bikes. I didn't care that it was spec engine, spec ECU, etc etc. I was on board with the idea of cheap(er) racing with equal machinery. And 600s. (I like I-4 screamers).

The first race, I was all in, gung-ho Moto2 fan. Especially since it provided a lot of constant action MotoGP was lacking. But then after a number of rounds ":thumbup" turned into ":|" which turned into ":x".

Why?

One word. Crashing.

At this point in the season, Elias is leading the championship and what is more interesting is that he is the ONLY rider to not crash or DNF out of any race so far this season. Everybody else has DNF'd. Actually, everybody else has DNF'd a minimum of two times.

Look at the standings.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/results/xx/2010/GER/Moto2/RAC/worldstanding.pdf?v1_2d6723e4

It seems to me the average number of DNF's is about 50%.

The idea of 40 bikes on track on close to equal machinery racing close sounded awesome. But what difference does it make if 10 of them crash out? Half of them in the first turn? Often taking out potential front runners at the same time. It seems like outside of Elias, finishing higher up in the points over the course of the season is more of an exercise of staying out of harms way and not crashing yourself. And not as much of a product of skill. The further down the points you go, the more DNF markers you see. I know to finish first you have to first finish but potential winners are becoming collateral damage through no fault of their own on what seems like a consistent basis. Not just isolated incidents like a Pedrosa-Hayden 06 missile dive.

Elias may not be winning every race and dominating everyone but his results as the only person not to DNF says to me they need to get him out of there next season and back to GP.

I'm sick of seeing turn 1 train wrecks every race and another 5+ bikes crashing out after that. I don't even watch anymore. MotoGP may not be passing action all race but at least the riders are finishing on the bike most of the time. (except for the Laguna crashfest).

Whatever they need to do next season to stop this, I hope they do it. Whether it's cutting 10 bikes off the grid or talking to these boneheads like a parent does to a child, something needs to give.

Am I alone or are you guys still on the Moto2 wagon?

I'm enjoying it very much. Lotta pure motorcycle spirit out there. And Darwin's theorys are fun to watch.

i love the racing, but i agree that the number of bikes on the grid needs to drop. which may happen as i don't see much value in being a sponsor for any teams in the rear. hell, i'd be hard pressed to name the sponsors of the top 5 guys and i've watched every race.

I thought the Moto2 races are entertaining at least. The MotoGP w/12 bikes (or less) running after a few dnf's sux balls...

40 bikes is too many. 17 bikes is too few.

Perhaps they could break the field up into two groups of twenty and run two 10 lap "qualifiers". The top 1/2 from each heat move on to the final race which now only has 20 bikes.

The turn 1 train wreck is a bit of a downer.

What are you guys talking about?

The crashing is awesome! There have been so many cool crashes.. AND there is usually some good racing in there too. What more could you ask for?!??!

It's like MOTGP is the NBA and Moto2 is NCAA.. It's great to see the best of the best, but you always have a soft spot for College games because ANYTHING can happen.

i think its been the best racing this year so far, closely followed by WSBK. The crashing is a bit of a bummer, but it reminds me of an AFM race. :rofl

I'm loving Moto2 more than 250's. Having that many bikes jockey for position into turn 1 makes for a more exciting race. There have been quite a few last lap battles for the win and the bikes are very evenly matched...

Not as fast as I look.

Or AMA 600, especially supersport. It's just the class. 600s and younger/hungry riders trying to move up. Remember Fontana when it looked like there might be six guys left after the third restart. :laughing Part of pro racing is surviving the crash-grind up the ladder.

Ah, yeah, they all have the same engines. :teeth Which, btw, sound GREAT. And they put out a ton of hp for something that is "mass produced" and designed to be reliable. Kudos to Honda!

So far, so good. 250's were exciting, but the 600's have more people with equal equipment which means more people having a chance to fight for the win.

BTW, have people been watching AMA racing this year? It's quite a bit better than the last two years. Getting rid of Roger has really improved things for AMA, with the added benefit that there have been no really retarded incidents happening so far this year.

Hence why they pile into t1 6-8 wide and pile up. because if they are not with the front runners coming out of T1 they know that the bikes are so even that they can not make up ground from the back of the pack.

That's the points ... no points != DNF.

The race with the least number of finishers was at Spain with 26 ... it usually hover around 30 finishers. Definitely not 50% DNF rate.

True. I forgot. :)

Still, there are way too many crashes.

Hello, world!
I think it's okay. Probably needs fewer starters, but I bet it'll happen anyway next year. This is kind of a crapshoot year because a lot of money is being pumped into it at a clean slate stage with some added publicity because it's a new thing. 2011 and on, things will calm down a bit, I'm sure. Some good racing. Hope injuries are kept to a minimum.

I'm really enjoying Moto2 so far. There have only been one or two boring races, whereas the 125 and GP races tend to be a little disappointing. And they're all riding on bikes that aren't that far off from what I'd ride if I went to the track myself.

I don't mind that Elias is cleaning up so far. Of all the Moto2 riders that should really be on a GP bike, he's my favorite. I also love seeing Simon backing it in to every corner. I guess I just like seeing bikes slide around (and I don't mind the crashes, either :p).

I also like seeing some of the less successful riders peaking periodically. A win from Cluzel was exciting/scary to watch, Noyes scrapping it out up front on the Spanish tracks is great to see, etc. I suppose the inconsistency of some of these riders is a bit of a tease, though.

I'm also even enjoying seeing that asshole Iannone doing well. :p
