New Years Day Ride......

Even though I no longer have a bike, I still think about the rides along the coast that I'd do whenever I got the chance on New Years Day. I live in San Jose and I'd gear up, making sure my Gerbing jacket and pants liners were operating, don my Darien with a neck up to keep my neck warm and a silk balaclava under the helmet and head south. Usually I'd just go over 17 to 1 and head down the coast. I'd make sure I was gassed up in Carmel and then motor down 1 to Cambria where I'd get lunch at the one of two places on the coast there on Moonstone Beach Drive. Then I'd turn around and ride the coast all the way back. If I left by 8 in the morning, I'd usually be back home by 5. The great thing about doing this ride on New Years Day is that almost no one will be on the road. I think I recall riding all the way from Carmel to Cambria one time and only seeing two or three cars.

So, if any of you are looking for a great ride for tomorrow, I highly recommend a ride down the coast to Cambria and back. The weather looks like it'll be sunny but it WILL be cold. Very. And even if it's overcast, the ride is still fantastic. And it will be memorable. :ride

Yes, I will!

And I certainly do. Thanks!

I will be riding out this Morning. Heading out at 8am. 8 riders will be heading to the Marin coast. 39F to start out, wind chill Ouch. Occidental for Breakfast and then Cruise the empty roads. Maybe climb Mt Tamalpias for a good panoramic view of the Bay area.

Oh I almost forgot to mention, it will be aboard an ST1100 just for you Martin.

Darin Jacket check.
Elec Jacket check.
Elec Gloves check.

Leave in 30 min for Tracy and breakfast. Then up to the top of Mt Hamilton and the Lick Observatory. Everyone have a good ride and think of ST Guy he is a good man. If you see an old man on a white Multistrada in Hivis jacket wave or say hello.

Back home with a temperature of 15 degrees and snow on the ground. No ride for me, but I will also be there vicariously!

I had so much traffic in the Marin twisties, but *only* 15 minutes of lane splitting to get back into town. The years of getting a good ride in on Holidays are gone, there are too few arterial highways to get into the hills, and the mountain roads are full of cars looking to park so they can hike. :nchantr

Went for a blast up the river road between Antioch and Sacramento ( hwy 160). Roads were dry, few cars on the road and the best part was no bugs too cold for em.

Nice view you have there!

I like cliffs and hills for that reason.
It's cold but riding is just out my side yard.
Just warm enough to ride now today.

NewYears Day 5:00 AM:
Mrs Jim and her ski buddies took my car to the Sierra with a promise not to return until Saturday, leaving me car-less, awake and well....

...ready to ride!

By 6:00 AM, the first twinkling of day was glowing under the Moon/Venus alignment in the Eastern sky, and I was roaring over the Golden Gate Bridge, with a cold wind in my face.

Other than the 100's a clueless bicycle riders I encountered south of Olema, it was a obstacle-free, unrestricted blast all the way to the Bovine Bakery, where the morning's delights were still fresh from the oven.

A cuppa and a morning bun later I was slaloming next to Tomales Bay, Northbound with those glowing grip heaters keeping the ride toasty. I rode, and rode up the Shoreline, finally stopping for a rest on the Jenner Headlands, then back via the Backroads of Sonoma.

I was glad I had gotten out early, as the traffic over the Golden Gate around noon was a gloriousclusterfuck of tourists, clueless Ubers and wallowing tourist buses. I skirted the City by taking the Presidio streets to the Great Highway...getting home just in time to take a nap and watch the Huskies get bitchslapped in the Rose Bowl.

Pretty close to a perfect New Year's day. The only downer were the National Park restrooms near Inverness. Peeee -ewwww...
