T'sup everyone! I'm new to the the site. I actually don't own a bike yet, but am very interested in buying one, especially since all my friends have one - peer pressure! Anyway, the finances are holding me back at this point, but I'd still love to learn as much as I can. A friend of mine owns a local shop and is trying to talk me into buying one soon, but the wife isn't big on bikes - so I've got an uphill climb ahead.

What does everyone here suggest for a first bike? GSXR600 maybe?

I suggest taking the MSF course if you don't have any prior riding experience.

Some would argue that a gixxer for a 'first' bike (or even anything >600cc) could be dangerous, but to each their own. I guess alot would depend on your potential riding ability. You may easily outgrow a 250 or 500. Also get a used bike first, especially if you're just learning.

But take the MSF course and get started there. Good luck!

Has been here a long time
1st: :welcome
2nd: 1-800-CC-RIDER, take the course, if you have no experience, or shit, even if you do, its a good brush up on the forgetful basics.
3rd: Go used bike, if its your first.

Good luck, ride safe....

no way gix as first bike. your survival rate will multiply 100 fold by not choosing a bike like that right off the bat. this is not a challenge just IMO. stick to sane 1st sportbikes ie. EX500 or standards and sane pace while you learn to ride.

good luck! motorcycling can be deadly that's just the fact.

Welcome!

I agree to what everyone had said - take a MSF course and buy a used bike lower than 600cc . Ride a motorcycle only if YOU want to, NOT because most of your friends want you to. Motorcycling is not for everyone. Please be careful. It's true what some people say... One could die in a motorcycle accident.

:welcome Go with a less intense bike first after the MSF education. If you have a lot of experience in the dirt the GIxxer 6 might be okay..if you gotta have new...Suzuki SV 650 is more of an all around bike with still enough power to run with the dogs when you get up to speed and an excellent track scoot too..
Good luck...
