New out of state bike registration question.

I bought a new 50-state bike with MSO from and Oregon dealer, and will register it in CA.

Dealer in Oregon says, all I need to do is bring to the DMV, the MSO (which shows it is a 50-state bike), the odometer statement, and the bike's receipt showing the purchase price to get my plate an title. Yes, i'll be paying CA taxes on my OR purchase.

In reading, it seems I may need to do a VIN and 50-state decal check with the bike in tow at the DMV.

Anyone done this and what is the preferred way? I've already made an appointment with the DMV.

Also, if i'd like to do the VIN check prior, i've read that some CHP stations do this. Any idea where I can go for that?

Simple vin check can be done at DMV. Santa Clara does it as a separate entity, first come first served deal. There is a drive through style line that goes around the back. Do it when you have a chance, and just take the paper they fill out with you to your appt.

I did the vin check before at dmv and it was a pain in the ass.

I found a 3rd party agency that did it for 50 bucks.

Just did this at the Santa Clara DMV (with a truck I purchased out of the state. The vehicle inspection went quick. The pain in the butt part was trying to find parking after the check (had to go back in to finish the registration).

I did this on Thursday at the Santa Clara DMV. Drove thru the verification area, no line, person came out & checked all info and filled out form ... took like 5 minutes.

The wait inside to get it registered was another story!

Be prepared with paperwork to show its a 50 state compliant bike if the sticker doesnt specifically say CA CARB. I had to go back to the DMV with a Porsche I brought into the state due to this. The car was 50 state legal but emissions sticker didnt specifically say it.

Got my plates and reg. easy peasy.

Instead of doing a VIN verification at the DMV or CHP, I did it at a 3rd party agency. I then took that form along with the MSO, odometer statement to the DMV and it was done.

I saved a couple grand buying a new bike out of state, but spent 2 hours at the DMV today. Not sure if the trade off was worth it.:cool

I used these guys: https://www.californiacartags.com/vin-verification

They do vin verification at their office for $50 or they can come to you. They are authorized DMV agents.

They can actually process my entire out of state purchase, and it would have been $120 with vin verification, but I decided to cheap out and go to the DMV afterwards--in hindsight, I would have gladly done everything there for $120 and gotten my plates and tags from them rather than spend 2+ hours waiting in line at the DMV.

Oh well, lesson learned.

I did this last year. If the VIN is easily visible they will check it along with everything else at the DMV. My examiner said you only have to go to the The CHP if the VIN is too hard for them to find.
BTW, you mentioned heading in with the bike in tow. I don't think that is necessary. The temporary registration you got from the Oregon dealer is good enough to ride to the DMV. I don't think the examiner even checked for a registration.

Just did this for a used dirt bike and used truck. With appointment it was all of about 1 hour. Drive to DMV, get VIN verification, go in for appointment and pay.

The truck was a bit trickier. They wanted an additional weight verification that I was instructed to get at a recycling center. Was able to do a fact form (affidavit, if you will) to state that the vehicle had not been modified in any way as to affect its weight.

Thanks Stan, I paid Conar Services a visit late last week with a Harbor Freight endoscope camera.
Mario looked at all body numbers and the engine number.
They took care of everything, including the title.
This was well worth the money and time
I now have plates, and registration no headaches from the dmv
