New bike, transfer vanity plate

I bought a brand new bike today.

My old bike was totalled 3-4 weeks ago. It had a vanity plate. I rescued the physical plate from to totalled bike.

I want to put the old plate on the new bike.

Can someone please explain to me what i need to do?

My vague understanding is that I own the plate, and that I can transfer it to the new bike, but I could not do that through the dealer.

I figure it would *not* be legal for me to put the plate on the new bike until transfer has been done at DMV or AAA, but I'd like to put it on sooner if I can. I mean, if the police run the tag it will come up with my info anyway, right?

Just go into the DMV with the plate and they'll take care of it. I had one plate on a Ducati Monster, Ducati ST2, and KTM 990 Adv. Because the ST2 was used, I took both plates with me to the DMV when I registered it and I was set. Because I bought the KTM from a dealer, I had to wait for the new plate to arrive before I could go in and make the switch. I was tempted to put the plate on there before it was all legal, but I didn't.

Much easier here in Idaho. When I thought I would only have one bike for a while I ordered my primary personalized plate and was going to put it on my Honda. Then I bought the KTM at the same time that plate showed up. Here, you don't get a plate in the mail, you take the dealer paperwork to the DMV and get a plate on the spot. (The title comes later in the mail.) So I had them switch the plate to the KTM and it was on the bike the same day I purchased it. Then I had to order another special plate for the Honda, which took three and a half more weeks.

I don't envy the wait you'll have at the DMV office to get all of this done. After four trips to the Idaho DMV to register vehicles the longest wait was 8 minutes and I have never bothered with an appointment. :teeth

It would make sense that if cops ran the personalized plate your info would come up since it's supposed to be tied to you and a registered vehicle. But, just to be on the safe side, I would just wait for your new regular sequential plates to get mailed to you, then fill out the paperwork for a plate substitution.

I believe it's 2 forms, and you can get it done at the AAA if you're a member. AAA should save a huge amount of time. You need Form REG 156 Application for Replacement Plates, Stickers, Documents; and Form REG 17 Special Interest License Plate Application. REG 156 allows you to surrender the current plates (new plates dealer got for you), and REG 17 allows you to retain and reassign interest of your personalized plate.

^^^^You must wait for the plates then take them to Dept of monkey vehicles, only then can they be swapped out.
If you have AAA all the more better. no lines and monkey business.
