NBC bay area news report (my 3 seconds of fame)

What a bullshit report. Agenda much?

I thought what you had to say was good, however. Just unfortunate they only had you in there to show they cared about both sides, when clearly this was an anti-lane splitting segment.

It TV News. Its not journalism. Local TV news sells fear and anxiety with the occasional feel good story about puppies. The next few stories after the Lanesplitting piece were probably about The Scary Internet, Germs in Your Home and What Your Doctor Won't Tell You.

Randy you did well.

Bighad ignored our reaching out to provide solid info to him. Both I and Kazman offered to provide information to him. All I can think is he intentionally ignored it so they could sensationalize their story :thumbdown

The whole story was bias from the first two sentences. "Those motorcycles that zoom between traffic". :rolleyes

Dad who died was a sad deal for sure.. why did he die?? Because he did not follow the safety protocols of not splitting by big rigs. Simple... how about you ask that question Mr. Journalist??

I am really disappointed. Bighad reached out to us.. we got Randy (who did rep us well) in touch with him and he did little to really understand why lanesplitting can be dangerous or the level of danger that is involved.

I was please to see Officer Starkey correctly answer his question..:cool

Face it.. the general public does not like us cutting in line and does not realize that every time we roll by it is another car that is not in front of them slowing their progress.

I never actually met Bighad, I talked with the cameraman/producer. I talked with him for about 20 minutes and then did some videoing outside the building and then on 880. I think I had all of 10 seconds on screen after all of that, but it is what it is.
I just wish they would have done the story without so much bias involved.
I understand that family's pain at loosing him, but his death was on him for splitting not one, but two semi's. :wtf When they said that I about fell over.

Honest, if unwelcome, report.

Randy B: Glad your crash wasn't too severe and that you've healed up. You blame it on "lack of education for drivers". Sorry, but if you'd known that a lane-changing car was the most frequent cause of lane-splitting crashes, you would have been more cautious when that spot in lane #1 opened up. Driver education might lower lane-splitting crash risk, but we motorcyclists still have the responsibility to protect our own asses.

April Mistretta and Kim McDonald, whose father was killed in a lane-splitting crash: Very sorry for your loss, but he was on an Electra Glide splitting between a tractor-trailer and a 3-axle flatbed truck. That combination has deadly potential, and your father was one of 7 splitters killed in 2015 in crashes with trucks. Like many other lane-splitters, your father lacked the knowledge he needed to do it safely.

Chris Cochran, California Office of Traffic Safety: You said that the OTS study showed that splitting at 10-15 over traffic moving at 35 or less is "no more dangerous than riding under any circumstance." ABSOLUTELY, TOTALLY WRONG. Your study showed NO SUCH THING. It found that CRASHING while splitting in those conditions produced less severe injuries than other motorcycle crashes (such as slamming into a redwood or T-boning a red-light runner). It concluded nothing about the LIKELIHOOD of crashing.

If the Office of Traffic Safety would like to make itself useful in reducing lane-splitting crashes, it would fund a thorough study of crashes reported in the data IT ALREADY HAS. Where do they occur, highway and lane position? What other vehicles are involved? What pre-crash maneuvers lead up to the crash? What manner of collision (sideswipe, rear-ender, non-impact etc.) is involved?

Yeah, fucking DataDan, blah blah blah. Sorry to interrupt the outrage with reality.

I didn't think the report was too bad, but it would have been nice if he had mentioned that splitting between Semis is one of the most dangerous things a rider can do. I don't like to split with even one of them to the side of me because it feels so unsafe - unless it is completely stopped.

Doesn't DataDan have more information about splitting accidents? Or is it the same 14-month study that was mentioned in the report?

I hadn't gotten far enough passed the front bumper of the car in the #1 lane to safely move over when the car in the #2 lane moved suddenly. My handlebars were at the drivers seat back and had the driver looked at all either in the mirror or over the shoulder I would have been seen. There wasn't enough room for that car to safely move in front of the car in the #1 lane so I had no concerns of that maneuver happening.
There was a lot of my comment missing from that little snip-it so take it with a grain of salt.

It's a pity people call that "news".

I'm really sorry for the sisters who lost their dad, especially a total avoidable crash, which the dad was the sole responsible party.

LEGAL?!? Then why did I get a reckless driving conviction??? LIES!

Because the officer considered you reckless and the judge agreed.
Just trying to help clarify. I was not there and have no opinion on your riding.

Haterade from MSLSD... Such a biased lefty media outlet.
If meathead had actually talked to Randy he still would of skewed what he said to twist it up like all splitters are the devil.
It has a lot to do with us taking cuts in line, and people absolutely hate it.
I encounter monkeys who don't allow me to pass riding the right side of the lane on purpose on a daily basis.
It is what it is. I take comfort that I can go around the idiot.
So sick of all the extreme cases of V**inosis, and everyone's inner child being wounded because they didn't get a trophy for being in the game.
Don't like us splitting ride a bike damn it.
On the other side to play the devils advocate we as splitters must be good ambassador's.
Try not to poke the tigers, no mirror slapping, or window knocking or here is my pet peeve.
Do not rev your engine, and scare the wits out of some poor sap who is asleep & doesn't see you.
