My registration has expired

Problem is I can't remember if I paid it, my credit card history is online and has to be searched month by month and I don't know what to search for, DMV didn't find anything.

Anybody know if there is a way to find out?

I am going to call AAA tomorrow and ask if I can do it through them, to check if I owe, and pay and get the stickers. If I did pay it is another form for duplicate stickers, that one I found online at any rate.

if you paid via cc; this would be the entry:

"STATE OF CALIF DMV INT SC8 STATE OF CA - SACRAMENTO, CA"

Real simple. Call your CC bank. Tell them you made a payment for (registration amount) and they can find it in seconds. Good news bad news thing right?

If you did pay it you can get the DMV to issue new stickers at no cost if you never rec'd them. Naturally that depends on how long it's been since you should have rec'd them.

RAMPAAAAAAGE!
And my wife wonders why I'm so anal about this stuff. Each vehicle has a file folder in the cabinet for all the service receipts and stuff like this. Reg renewal comes in the mail, gets paid online same day, print receipt and staple it to the renewal notice and into the file folder in the cabinet. So if the new reg doesn't show on time I already know right where to look for what I need to remedy the situation. Stay organized people! :laughing

Seriously tho, sorry about your situation. You can just go to AAA with your expired reg and they should be able to tell you if it's been paid or not. Or just go speeding by a cop at 90mph in a 25 and they'll be happy to tell you as well :teeth

I suppose i should have mentioned I lost the paperwork, I don't have the bill, just the registration from last year, and it expired in December, I just noticed the plate yesterday.

The AAA website sez
AAA is only able to accept cash or personal check for DMV services; debit and credit cards cannot be accepted.

I paid with a credit card at AAA a few weeks ago when I registered a new vehicle.

Just think it through.

Who has the info you need? The DMV (AAA does too) The info you are looking for is the registration fees for the current year less penalties if it hasn't been paid. You are trying to find out if you paid it right?

So now you have the base fee, the total amount you would have paid but can't recall if you did.

Armed with that info you call your CC bank. Ask the CSR to find if there has been a charge for that amount within the last 4 months. You wouldn't have paid it six months ago right, most likely between last October and December. They can find this information in seconds.

Then you will know if your card got charged for that amount. If the answer is yes then ask the bank to email you a record of the transaction or failing that since you then know the exact date, searching your online records is easy and quick.

Then comes the good/bad time. If you didn't pay, get ready, the penalties are quite hefty. So what, you messed up so pay up. If you did pay, since you have a record of the payment you can get the DMV to reissue the registration document and replacement sticker.

Think step by step:

What is the real problem?
What info do you need to solve the problem?
Who has the info you need?
Get info.
Solve problem.
Don't repeat.

Things like this can be overwhelming, it messes with you because you can't recall if you paid the fees. Shit happens. It's like losing your only key to the bike, if you let the monster cloud your thinking you end up taking a bike apart when the answer was a phone call.

Now, all the talk doesn't help you much without a start so here is a start:

Follow this link and it will give you the registration fee and perhaps also penalties. Disregard the penalties just pay attention to the normal registration fees which is the number you need.

Yes, it is for buying but by massaging the dates you can get the info. Don't mind screw this, it is easier than you might think.

Remember, the bank can easily search for an approximate amount for the charge, it doesn't have to be exact. You're going to tell the bank CSR who would have rec'd the money (State of California...) and the amount. Tell them it might not be the exact amount.

They will tell you. Then solve your problem. This should take no more than a few minutes of your time.

So I tried the online system, and it says my lic/vin is invalid, I am beginning to think something is messed up on their end, so likely I never received a notice which is why I can't find it. It took almost a year to get the plate, and 6 months to get the title after I paid it off. That seems unusually slow.

So I'll head over to AAA in a bit.

Thanks for that registration fee page, it shows I paid in Oct 2018, so I just need duplicate stickers, great. :)

That used to be the case but now they take CC (unless something changed in the last few months).

Cash , checks, or debit. Wait the thirty days before going to dmv and request/not received stickers. Bring proof you paid. A lot of people go home empty handed/frustrated after waiting for a while.
