Akai Suisei - 赤い彗星
So, I thought I might give you all and update on what I've been up to. Some barfers (particularly those in the motogp/wsbk race threads) know I've been in Hawaii for awhile.
Also, for those of you that remember, I finally finished my undergraduate degree back earlier this year.
Well, considering the 'real world' is not quite as nice as most college grads think it will be, having had the 'real world' experience for about 5 years prior to returning to college to finish my undergraduate study, I had no preconceived notions I'll be able to immediately find a job just because I have a piece of paper saying I did some stuff from some college.
Surely enough, after about two months, I hadn't turned up a job yet, I was getting quite restless just sitting at home, sending out my resume to people who will probably never even read it. (Applying for jobs really sucks.)
So, I called my uncle, who lives in Hawaii and asked him if he could put me to work for a bit since I really needed to generate some income and I've never been to Hawaii even though the rest of my immediate family has. He is a general contractor (builds houses, painting, repairs, additions, he does it all) and has lived on the island of Oahu for about 20 years. He rang me back after a week or two and said be here next week. So I booked a one way ticket to Oahu.
The day I first got there, my uncle didn't make me do any real work but the following Sunday morning, it was up and at 'em, 7AM. First thing he had me to was replace a spark plug on his F350 V10 dually, along with the broken coil. Just my luck the offending spark plug was the rear most plug so I couldn't see shit and all the tool angles were terrible. Took me about 4 hours to fix what would be a 10 minute job on just about any other vehicle. And the rest of the day, I spent trying to organize his garage full of tools and materials. Fuck that damn truck.
Lucky for me, 'actual' work turned out to be less frustrating. The primary job he had going that brought me to the island was painting an apartment building in Waikiki, which took about 3-4 weeks. Most days were just doing prep work... sanding, masking, applying primer, while me and the other workers shoot the shit and listen to the radio. Some days, I got to operate heavy machinery. The controls were really just like playing a video game... Other minor projects including some drywall repair in a home, door replacements.
I didn't take as many pictures as I probably should of but that's because even though I was on the island I was hardly on vacation. I was working almost everyday and when I get home from work,, I didn't wanna do much but eat dinner, watch tv for a bit, drink a cold one, and go to sleep. But these are the limited pictures I took.
This was my primary form of transportation. Always on call, I was. Go to Home Depot, pick up this, deliver that.
The view from the backyard of my uncle's house. It's hard to tell, but this is a view of Pearl Harbor. You can also see every plane that takes off from the airport. The pool in the picture is unfinished. It's a saltwater, edgeless pool. The house he built himself over about 10 years and it's very nice.
When I wasn't driving that fat heavy bitch, aka the work van, this was how I got around
These are views from the house my uncle is building in Kaneohe. If anybody's seen 50 First Dates, you can see this exact view in one shot of the movie. Being a socal resident, seeing someplace you know in a movie is really no big deal, but having never been to Hawaii, I thought this was really cool.
The H3 highway that goes towards Kaneohe was quite amazing. So much greenery everywhere and driving through the mountain side was also amazing. I know how the weather patterns work but still, you go in on one side and it's dry as a bone and come out on the other side with cloudy and rainy skies.
Me, as the paint ninja
I felt a lot of pride when all of the other veteran workers could not operate this boom left as well as me. I was sad to see it go.
Working in the hot Hawaiian sun tanned me just a tad
In my free time, I actually solved a rubik's cube!!
Don't get me started on the motherfuckin pests. Rats! roachers! and motherfuckin centipedes. I've never seen centipedes this size. Shit creeped me out. Best believe I threw a dictionary at this mofo... Didn't know who he was fuckin with
Sometimes instead of driving straight home, I'd stay down in Waikiki waiting for the H1 traffic to die down. The building we were painting is only about a 5 minute walk from the beach. I'd go down there, float in the Hawaii waters, walked the hotel strip, sit at the bar, it was all good.

Being the rainbow state, seeing any rainbow was a blessing. The first time I saw a rainbow, I thought, "I'm really here... Rainbow state indeed."
I also saw my first double rainbow while I was here.
