Movies Worth Watching

So, I got the idea from the Netflix Recommendation thread and from a conversation I had at work - what movie/s are mandatory watches in your book...?

Movies currently on my need-to-watch list:

- A Few Good Men
- Pulp Fiction (I know...)
- Raging Bull
- Citizen Kane
- The Maltese Falcon
- Scarface
- The Godfather

What else am I missing?

If you're gonna watch Pulp Fiction, you'd better check out Resevoir Dogs too and see why Quentin became a big deal. You'll also see why Quentin Tarantino likes using some of the same actors in every movie...Michael Madsen and Harvey Keitel are awesome in this.

Not sure what you have and haven't seen already. So just how big was the rock you've been living under? Must be pretty big if you haven't seen any of those on that list. Since you've got some older stuff there let's go with these ten...

12 Angry Men (the original with Peter Fonda)
Patton
The Boondock Saints
Heat (I'll fucking kill you if you haven't already seen this)
Apocalypse Now
Silence of the Lambs
The Hunt For Red October
The Shawshank Redemption
Gone With the Wind (because Clark Gable was a boss)
....aaaaand Raising Arizona, for a laugh Coen Bros style

I honestly don't see the appeal of 2001 space oddessy.

Did ya ever watch 2001 a space odyssey.....on WEED man!?!?!?!?!?:laughing

Seriously it's a trippy movie. The camera work was ground breaking for it's time. I might have to watch it again soon, have a little matt time:laughing

A must see Motorcycle movie, World's Fastest Indian. Caught that one on netflix a few months ago:thumbup:thumbup

AbsolutEnduser

Throttle Pusher
The Deer Hunter

Heat (I'll fucking kill you if you haven't already seen this)

Ah.. Heat. Yeah, that's a pretty dumb movie for Robert De Niro. For the others it's OK, esp. the hot chicks. It's still an OK action movie I guess. The only one dumber I can remember for R. De Niro is .. Ronin

Ronin was ok. Decent car chase scene in it. But Heat is a dumb movie for De Niro? Whaaaaaat? And Meet the Little Fockers Parents or whatever is passion work for him? Pacino and Bobby D have done some pretty iconic roles in the past, but Heat was still serious work for them. Not like the last cop movie those two were in together a couple years ago. Pretty much just phoned in their parts. Fucking 50 cent was in that movie and acted just as well.

Gimme Casino over Heat any day. (I loved Heat when it came out.)

I rented The Dear Hunter because I'd heard so many great things about it and was completely disappointed. I think the FORTY-FIVE MINUTE wedding reception scene was the capper on that. Add in Walken's fate and at the end I was just laughing at myself for being dumb enough to not turn it off after the first hour of nowhere-going schlock.

I'll toss out a few that I think are good. Others will probably think some of them are crud.

Tarantino's complete works (max effect if you watch them in chronological order)
American Beauty
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
The Birdcage
Requiem for a Dream
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Fargo
Slingblade
Star Wars (IV-VI)
Lord of the Rings trilogy

i'll tell you which director i don't like: martin scorsese.

saw hugo this weekend. boring. turns out i find all of his movies boring.

i'm such a lemming, i've seen all his classics (raging bull, taxi driver, good fellas, color of money) and never loved any of them.

all technically superior movies. all great actors with good to great acting. and original stories. but so fucking boring.

i can see why film critics love the guy. it's like music snobs loving opera - technically superior to any pop music out there and taking years or even decades to perfect. but oh so fucking boring. kind of like scorsese - he's even boring in interviews for fucks sake.

enlighten me. pick out one thing that makes you love his movies.

everyone says the guy is a genius, maybe he is, but i've never been so engrossed by his movies to fall in love with any of them. half of them i'll nod off; they move too slow for me.

and i'm more entertained by jackass/knoxville than a scorsese film; at least i can laugh watching jackass.
