Motorcycles chasing cars in the movies...

Okay, Budman wants more posts, here goes. :laughing

I've watched a few movies where motorcycles are chasing cars and it seems to me that it would be totally easy for the car to take out a bike and continue on their way while the rider is picking their ride back up.

In the Italian Job, the BMW motorcycles (with 4-cylinder sound effects) are chasing the Mini Coopers through the round sewer pipe with water in the bottom. I would expect that if they hit the brakes in there, the bike would bump into the back of them and go down. Okay, after they came out of the pipe they opened a door and knocked the rider off, but that seems more improbable than just bumping the bike with a bumper or something.

I was recently watching The Bourne Identity and there is another chase with Paris police in cars and two on motorcycles chasing an older Mini through Paris. I would think that when he goes down the stairs (at about 45 seconds in the above link) all he would have to do is stop at the bottom and the bikes would bounce off of the car. Fortunately for Bourne the last motorcycle hits somebody who crossed his path and they got away.

Seeing as how I ride in the dirt a lot, I know that a motorcycle can recover from bumping into things or getting out of shape, but I have no doubt that a car could easily take me out if they wanted to do it on purpose. That's one reason why I don't ride next to other vehicles any more than absolutely necessary.

So - opinions? Links to other great motorcycle vs car chase scenes?

At least Budman had better weigh in on this, since he requested it. :)

I am chiming in!

The good ones actually have the guy or gal shooting with their left hand.

The Tom Cruise on in one of the Mission Impossible Movies is pretty good. Two up as well. I am impressed by the stuntmen and women that do those for sure.

Have to look for that tonight and chime back in. :teeth

Rolls with it...
In my opinion, BMW pays producers a lot of money to Minis and motos in movies....

I've always been frustrated not only by the sound effects, but the use of different bikes being used as the same bike due to different stunts.

Of course when the protagonist is in a car being chased by antagonist bikers I always say the same thing... BUMP'em!

Did you notice the dirt tires on that Ducati? Actually, the tires would change back and forth depending on whether it was on asphalt or dirt.

And changing the sound of the engine just bugs the heck out of me.

I wasn't really looking for any movie with a motorcycle in it. And I put all James Bond and Mission Impossible movies in the fantasy category anyway.

The scene from Terminator 2 is actually pretty good because it is a lot closer to reality as far as vehicle behavior goes. Well, except for the 20-speed Honda with a four-stroke motor but two-stroke sounds.

So, am I the only one who believes that a bike could be easily taken out just by hitting the brakes at the right time?

...well...that and the part where the giant truck somehow catches up just barely enough to rear-end the bike; and the kid not only doesn't go down, but finds more speed. I'm not sure I believe that part - although I can't say it's ever happened to me.:laughing

Are we having fun yet?

Agree with you that most of the bike chase car scenes in movies are not realistic. In all out chases, the multi-ton 4 wheel vehicles can be deadly weapons in and of themselves. No bike could get away with tailgating cars that way. For that matter, police motorcycle escorts in motorcades seem more ceremonial than for serious protection.

Bikes have the advantage of being able to sneak up on cars and get away in assassination capacity, especially in dense urban environment. It's more effective 2-up - one rider, one shooter.

this is kind of no fun, but maybe more what you had in mind?:

1973 Ford Falcon XB GT Coupe “V8 Interceptor” vs Toecutter's 1977 Kawasaki Z1000 with La Parisienne fairing vs big truck ... :rose

at least the sound of the vehicles kind of works ... :dunno

I liked the motorcycle scenes in Venom. If you are gonna go all out fantasy, at least use superpowers and a motorcycle!

I agree, but let's also talk about the flip side: How about when a person on a really fast moto is somehow unable to outrun a car or truck in traffic? Like when the bad guy's in a semi and somehow runs down a fast moto?

another Mad Max example ... it's a four minute investment, but at least it's bikes chasing a vehicle:

youtu.be/-K20x3mFhZs

Gas-Gas TXT250s, Yamaha YZ250Fs and other bikes vs. modified Tatra T815 "War Rig" ... :ride

way more fun, and think they got the sound pretty correct, too ...
fun fact: Immortan Joe, the guy driving the monster truck, played Toecutter in the 1979 movie ...

Y'all sound like gun people and their kibitzing.

I liked the bear on the Ducati in Madagascar 3, and I thought both of Tom Cruises stunt sequences in the two MI movies were excellent.

Furiosa's personal sidearm is a blued Taurus PT99AF
Max's handgun is a Stainless Taurus PT99AF
Immortan Joe also uses a Colt Anaconda with 6" barrel - .44 Magnum
The Rock Rider Chief opens fire with a Kommando-LDP "Rhuzi" - 9x19mm

Mr Miller is a genius, and it's fun to follow everything he gets right in his art ... :toothless
