Moar Rear Brake

From the FZ-09 forum. This dude needs more rear braking power, so he’s fitted a front rotor to the rear wheel.

Discuss.

He’s afraid of loosing traction with “too much” front brake.

Yeah, this thread probably won’t last long. I was hoping for a bit of discussion to edumacate the newer riders.

I wonder if he tried different pads first.

I've had rear brakes that barely worked and so i changed pads and it was almost too strong.

gone for now
doesn't look like a front rotor to me

about the only time that'd make sense IMO is for stuntbikes where you ride the rear doing wheelies

If the guy is afraid of the front brake, the solution is to learn how to use the front brake properly.

An oversized rear brake rotor will not help him stop...

Could be useful in stunting, I suppose, but I don't do stunting so I don't know.

I use a lot of rear brake. If you're doing low speed stuff or Gymkhana, a brake like that makes a lot of sense. The rear rotor on my Buell is blue from dragging it while hooning around. The big rotor could be more about heat dissipation than power.

How is the caliper mounted?

Here’s the first post in his thread:

“I want to put a bigger brake on the rear and a stock front rotor would fit or a R1 would also fit. The bolt pattern front and back are the same
I will require cutting and welding the caliper mount but that is simple
I tried finding a used stock front rotor and the cost and shipping was too expensive
I have the option of cutting any rotor I want with a laser or water jet and decided it would be far cheaper to go that route
I decided to go big so I went with a 320 mm R1 look alike rotor
This is the raw cut, no grinding, no spot facing, no deburring
This cost $40 , takes about a minute to cut with .002 accuracy on the holes
I will make sure it would bolt up and once that is verified it will be ground to 6 mm, I know that is thicker then stock.
If 6 doesn't suit me I will grind it to 5mm but that is trial and error.”

Not a bad idea if the FZ-09 is capable of relatively high speeds in reverse, and you want utilize that feature as safely as possible. :dunno
