Metal Detection Anyone?

Its Dethklok!
Let me preface this by saying I lost my wedding ring deep in the yard. So I got a metal detector for a Christmas present! Yeah joy. I been using it but its weird and the directions are vague. Maybe it's like a delay in the detection beep? I find I can hold it over metal and it takes a couple or more seconds to beep. Which can make zeroing in on say a nail or a pop tab difficult. I have found an aluminum can but the ivy where I'm searching for my ring is deep. And my dog poops there too. Anyone else, preferably not on Oak Island, use one of these things help a brother out?

I could be wrong but I thought it was the passing over of the metal that triggers the beep. Just keep sweeping with it.

I bought one when I lost a pocket knife that I really loved and isn’t made any more while fishing. Never found it so I hope whoever picked it up is enjoying it and knows its value.

Now I have a stupid metal detector that I don’t need. I also could have the absolute wrong technique and may have swept right over it :dunno

I've used a couple of them and the ones that I have used needed to be calibrated. Get a small metallic object and sweep/adjust the detector until you get a signal when you sweep over the object. Be methodical and consistent in your sweeps. Don't sweep too fast.

Didn’t know those things can pick up aluminum. Thought those things really only picked up steel/iron stuff like those wands at the airport. My tungsten rings or the titanium plate and screws in my ankle never set them off.

I have a mid grade minelab detector. It's definitely not designed for a beginner, and I usually have to head to YouTube before I use it. Once my memory is jogged it's pretty easy to use and it will detect some very small and deep metals.

A pinpointer is almost a necessity as well.

detecting sensitivity and alerting thresholds are two separate functions of metal detecting.

We used to see a bunch of those *treasure hunters* out on the beaches at China Camp when I was growing up.
We would throw a handful of washers near them when they weren't looking.
That kept them entertained (and us) for hours.
