FYI...not just for 690 SMC

Got a recall notice from DMV #TB1204 it's for a fricken emission label recall. Can you believe that. You will not be able to register your bike unless you get this sticker and show proof. Easy enough just call any KTM dealership they will ask for the last 6 of your VIN your last name and they will give you a sticker and off you go. But i'm sure the state isn't doing this because they care soo much about our safety. They are doing this for the environment right because putting the newer sticker will make my bike emit cleaner air. Must the the new glue they are using.

"The TB1204 recall to replace your sticker might not seem like a big deal but many states now require this sticker to be on the vehicle to be inspected by DMV officer or qualified State Inspection station (in some cases yearly). Those that don't currently will be soon as each state moves into national compliance with emissions & registration on the DMV National Database, and of course, legislates another way to hit us with a fee or penalty. So registration & renewal now is affected as well as selling the bike later."

Not too much inconvenience for me cause dealership is 20 min away. I feel for those that live hours away. I don't think the dealership can legally mail sticker and paperwork (receipt of some sort) you need for DMV registration.

The dealer I bought my bike from went out of business, so I never got the recall notice. I did hear about it on the KTM forum, but never got the recall done. I've since sold that bike and the new owner had no trouble registering it. :dunno

The recall notice is not from dealership or KTM, it's from DMV in your registration notice you will receive. You cannot register the bike unless you send in paperwork stating the mentioned recall has been performed on bike. You cannot register on line you have to either mail in or drop off DMV office.

The way it was explained on Ktm talk, the correct stickers were sent to the selling dealer, and that's who was supposed to "install" them.

Maybe my bike (' 09 530EXC) just wasn't one of the recalled ones. :dunno

Please tell me more. I have my Rc51 for sale right now and the 690 is/was on the list of sumos for my next bike purchase.

I have a 2009 690 SMC and there have been two recalls that I've been notified of. One was for the lower front fork, specifically the brake caliper bracket. Supposedly it was cast incorrectly and could be too brittle so KTM basically replaced the forks for free. I took it to the dealer and they replaced both fork legs. I asked and ACE said they hadn't seen any failures.

The second was the sticker swap out. Its just one of those barely legible silver stickers that is adhered to the frame. I took a blow dryer to the original and replaced it with the new one and put it under the side panel so now its not visible. Done.

Other than that, the bike has been solid. :thumbup

i have a 2010. no problems to date, 1 year and 11k miles now. M-F commuter and OFO on sat and sun. probably OFO M-F as well. high of 65 mpg, low of 42, typically 49-52 mpg. i try to keep it around 80 when slabbing, but it'll go faster. insurance is super cheap compared to what i was paying on the FZ1 and the RC51, for more coverage.

equally important, i have learned more about the art of motorcycles on the SMC than anything previously owned. maintenance is easy so it's not daunting to give stuff a try. being smooth on the throttle, a bike with telepathic turn-in, little marbley things on the tires that i wasn't able to achieve on my other bikes.

for reference, 28k miles on the FZ1, 8k miles on the RC51, 10k among SV650s. the SMC opened the door to what was, for me, a whole new world.

Thanks for the clarification guys. For a minute there I was getting the impresion that these bikes could be a headache. Its now back on the list and placed towards the top.

Ktm 525, 530, 690
husky 510, 610
maybe a big husaberg
maybe a super built xr650 but it would have to be SUPER f-ing awesome cuz I already have one with full dirt knobbys thats plated....and no I don't want to have to switch it back and forth between a dirtbike and sumo.

Fan too close to the radiator, on some bikes made contact and caused a leak
Sharp edge of metal tab that holds on right side plastic makes contact with radiator, causing leaks on some bikes.
Bolts holding tank on been known to fail.
Premature wear on valve rockers.
Messy FI causing stall issues.

That’s all I got for now but there’s more.

Now waiting for someone to get butthurt for pointing out a bikes flaws

actually, i may have a spun bolt in the tank, so there is that.
the off-idle stalling issues, too. i hear that a readily available internet tune (like buy a cable and get the map for free) fixes that. got a cable?

that's the first time i've heard about the valve rockers, got a link? i've got a valve adjustment scheduled for this weekend, that way i know what to look for.

Don't have a link but read of this issue on advrider and they don't use the dewey decimal system so good luck finding it.
