Man volunteers for world first head transplant operation

He says it is possible to severe the heads of a living patient and a brain dead patient, with an otherwise healthy body, and re-attach the spinal chords using a substance called polyethylene glycol.

Of course, the other major hurdle both doctor and patient face is the expected cost of the operation, which could easily stretch beyond $10 million.

"The Daily Mail reports".... take it with a grain of salt.

i want to know if you can use a live body, kill it, attach the head, then resuscitate the body.

that'd mean we could bring back the dead (body).

Wouldn't this really be better named as a body transplant considering the only thing remaining that makes the transplantee who they are is their head/mentation?

Warning: Do Not Engage
By the rationale of swapping heads, couldn't they first test this technology by fixing someone with spine damage who is paralyzed? I mean if you sever and re-attach a head in a controlled manner, fixing someone who's head is already attached seemed like a no brainer (no pun intended).

IN any event, as usual, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

a real real-doll?

i'm excited by the potential applications of head transplants.

:laughing

I'm excited about the potential of paralysis reversal, as it's at least a feasible application for this "technology"

Apparently, PEG has been used to repair spinal column injuries in dogs already

Its Dethklok!
I read this story a couple days ago and where they interviewed an american doctor who says this is all "science-fiction." He claims you can't fix the spinal cord. And isn't PEG what you put in your radiator to keep it from overheating?

I think it has been done on dogs and other animals. Don't know how long they survived afterwards, and doubt the spinal cord was ever attached to the new head. Some doctor in Italy thinks it is possible in the near future.

you're thinking Propylene Glycol

this is Polyethylene Glycol

Only dogs that had naturally occurring complete paraplegia due to herniation of an intervertebral disc were included in the study...

is insensitive
Even if it is hocus pocus, I feel like if it is creating interest and buzz in major transplant reaearch it is probably a good thing.
