Looking for friends for weekend camping trips out of Solano county

I just picked up a 2009 BMW f800gs and want to get some camping and adventure weekend trips going. My friends ride street bikes and I just don't know anyone that is looking to go on an adventure. I have been looking at trips to Mendocino NF, Shasta, Tahoe, costal mountains north of SF. Also looking at taking a doc Wong lesson as I have only been riding for a year.

Welcome to our small Adventure Riding subforum ... :thumbup

think the next ride I'm planning on will be the annual fall StonyBARF ride, where the dirt bike subforum crew reserves the a group campground in Fouts Springs ... they have not announced the dates yet, I don't think ... there's great fire road loops from Fouts Springs for big ADV bikes ...

Covid and the recent fires and heat have put a crimp in my ADV riding/camping, hopefully things will come together in Mendo this fall ... :ride

I’ve got a DRZ 400 and I’m in the same boat as you. None of my friends ride dirt and I don’t like going out alone. Hit me up- I’d love to plan something in the next few months

I am in Solano County as well (Vacaville) while I can't do full weekend rides due to family time, I would be willing to show you knoxville, Rd-40, reiff rd and that area up there. It is my most frequent ride so I am quite familiar with it.

I am on a big ADV bike so I tend to stick to the fire roads but sporadically shoot off into the trails if thats what you are into.

I like to start early to be back early. I do the loop reverse of that ride posted above. 505>16>Rd-40>Upper Knoxville> Lower Knoxville > Fairfield

Half Fast at best......
You guys might want to start by doing the Berryessa ride. Pretty close to you both and the thread is stickied at the top of this forum. The ride hasn't been very active recently but the route is fun and a good place to ride bigger bikes.

ps- Lowhangingfruit- I lived in Crockett for 15 years. Fun little town and I miss it. :thumbup

I'm in Fairfield as well and interested in this ride.

I'm interested in a camping trip also. I've done plenty of camping and lots of riding, but have not camped from a bike. I'm on a 500EXC, so I'm a bit limited on speed and distance. But I have ridden the SheetIron 300 four times and the Ridgerunner 500 twice when it was still happening.

I need to get my bike setup for camping and work the kinks out, so I'm a noob at this point. I've read a ton of info on here, and just need to pull the trigger on equipment.

Id recommend the giant loop bags for camping on a thumper. I use the Great Basin and its really a great bag, and its size limits you to keeping your stuff/weight from getting out of control, which I think is really important for camping on a thumper. After several trips to Mexico living on the bike for a week and being prepared to sleep on the trail I find each year I bring a little less and enjoy the riding a little more.

I had been eyeing the Moskomoto Reckless 40L. I considered the Giant Loop, but thought it seemed big for my small bike. Any idea on how they compare?

40L? Do you pack everything in there or do you pack your tent and sleeping bag, for example, outside of the bag? I ask, because I'm looking at some cheapo waterproof bags and was trying to decide what size to get. I'm a light packer, no stove or cooking supplies, barely any clothes, etc.

I can’t remember how big my Great Basin is. It’s an older model so I think it’s a little smaller than the current one but bigger than the coyote. For moto camping I don’t bring a tent. For Baja I also skip the sleeping bag but for the years I did bring the sleeping bag I could fit it in the great basin with all my stuff. For me moto camping is more about the moto part than the camping part. In Baja we do 700-1000 miles so I keep it as light as possible for Max riding fun.

For adv moto camping I use the same philosophy but I’ll bring a sleeping bad, cot, and a chair along but I still keep it as light as possible because he riding is more fun for me that way.

It appears the Giant Loop Great Basin is 68L, the Moskomoto Reckless 40L is 40L in its standard config. I guess I really need to see them in person to determine which will work best for me.

I share your philosophy to an extent, but I always bring a tent. I think I was prey in a previous life, I need shelter when I sleep. I used to use a tiny little coffin, but as I get older, my tent choice has grown in size, but still light.

:laughing I totally get it, plus tents are easier to strap on the back, are light and come in handy for unexpected moisture. I bring a rain fly to drape over myself for just such occasions.

It's not my fault...

Never done this ride yet, been meaning to try it sometime. On a 701SM...no dirt tires yet.

I am in American canyon and ok with fire roads and some loose stuff on my bike. (No sand or single track.....bike too big and no knobbies). Done a few overnighter a to the lost coast with some adv boys through covelo and old pony express trail on the big pig so interested when in town as I travel for work.
