Leaving your wallet in the car - don't do it!

I know this is a common sense issue for most of you......BUT

I keep hearing stories from guys about their wallets being stolen from the center console of their vehicles at night.

This morning I just found out this happened to a co-worker. His wallet got "too big" with various cards so he didn't carry it on him all the time. Put his wallet in the center console one night (not a normal habit for him), forgot to bring it inside and it was stolen out of his car in his driveway in a very suburban part of Danville. His credit card was used at a Pinole Toys R Us by 8:30am the following morning.

This was a problem rampant in my neighborhood when I lived in the Oakland hills. Cars in my driveway were hit at least 3 times in the 2 years that I lived there.

People go into neighborhoods in the middle of the night and check for unlocked car doors. Sometimes they'll just slim-jim cars and steal everything of value that is inside. Slim Jims are easy to get; I bought one at Big Lots a few years ago. :wtf Srsly.

As the economy gets worse, this type of 'benign' crime will increase. The people who do this are going outside of their typical neighborhoods and into very nice areas now for better pickings.

Speed freaks have nothing else to do at 4am and this is the safest way for them to make a few hundred bucks. What better way to become a victim of ID theft than leaving credit cards & ID cards in your car?

Please make a habit of at least locking your valuables inside the glove compartment if you must keep certain things in your car at all times. I know we can't always remember to lock car doors & sometimes remote control buttons fail so just keep things out of sight or in a locked compartment.

Your belongings just aren't safe anymore no matter where you live. so take a few easy precautions and save yourself a lot of trouble!

If your cards or ID get stolen, look here first on what to do: http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs17a.htm

My wallet stays firmly against my ass until needed. Leaving it in the car? Wouldn't cross my mind.

I don't understand the wallet that's a purse - do you *really* need 18 business cards, every credit card you own, your social security card, that really cool fortune that made sense in 1999, the tied-chery stem that the really hot chick at that bar in Cabo gave to you, and enough $1 bills to choke a stripper? Really?

Get a small nonfold credit card wallet and leave the rest of that shit at home.

Guilty.(raises hand) Happened to me at BART. Took out license, atm & credit card for trip to SF. Came back, got in truck and noticed giant hole in dash(stereo gone). Reached down in panic(wallet gone) and, oh god, not the doobie out the ashtray too!!! Bastards!! The real pisser was they got the timeline of irreplacable baby photos of my kid in my wallet. Stereo had a combo so that fucked 'em and, gas card had been used quickly.

For every dude that is bad about emptying their wallet there is an equally bad (or worse!) lady with a 25lb purse. :laughing

I just hope that people realize how much work it takes to deal with ID theft as a result of being lazy and leaving their credit cards and ID in cars overnight. I understand being lazy and I am lazy about a lot of things. This is no longer one of them. I've been the chick who "hides" her purse under a coat in the backseat when I go out to the clubs. It's a bad move.

Put cc's/ID's in your house, your locked glove compartment, trunk, under the seat, even coat check is safer. Give thieves zero reasons to even try opening your car door!

I don't have a wallet for very practical reasons: nothing to put in it.

When I lived in Los Angeleez, and was driving a car, I routinely left my car unlocked. Go for it, I say! Go for it!
