antipathy
Lurks for the lulz
I know this is a common sense issue for most of you......BUT
I keep hearing stories from guys about their wallets being stolen from the center console of their vehicles at night.
This morning I just found out this happened to a co-worker. His wallet got "too big" with various cards so he didn't carry it on him all the time. Put his wallet in the center console one night (not a normal habit for him), forgot to bring it inside and it was stolen out of his car in his driveway in a very suburban part of Danville. His credit card was used at a Pinole Toys R Us by 8:30am the following morning.
This was a problem rampant in my neighborhood when I lived in the Oakland hills. Cars in my driveway were hit at least 3 times in the 2 years that I lived there.
People go into neighborhoods in the middle of the night and check for unlocked car doors. Sometimes they'll just slim-jim cars and steal everything of value that is inside. Slim Jims are easy to get; I bought one at Big Lots a few years ago. :wtf Srsly.
As the economy gets worse, this type of 'benign' crime will increase. The people who do this are going outside of their typical neighborhoods and into very nice areas now for better pickings.
Speed freaks have nothing else to do at 4am and this is the safest way for them to make a few hundred bucks. What better way to become a victim of ID theft than leaving credit cards & ID cards in your car?
Please make a habit of at least locking your valuables inside the glove compartment if you must keep certain things in your car at all times. I know we can't always remember to lock car doors & sometimes remote control buttons fail so just keep things out of sight or in a locked compartment.
Your belongings just aren't safe anymore no matter where you live. so take a few easy precautions and save yourself a lot of trouble!
If your cards or ID get stolen, look here first on what to do: http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs17a.htm
