Kooskia and Elk City, ID

Reading sckego's trip report reminded me this little unanswered curiosity of mine for years... SR13 running south from Kooskia, ID and SR14 east to Elk City... Looks like they would be fantastic roads as they follow closely the curves of some river. Added together, that's about a 60-mile stretch of twisty, oneway. Anybody got more info on these?

I've ridden 13 and and stayed a night in Kooskia. The road is not bad but nothing to write home about. It does have some nice scenery. It was the closes I've come to hitting a dear when one bolted out of a bush and crossed my path. I didn't even have a chance to use the brakes. Lucky for me it kept running across the road.

I am almost certain that I've ridden this road (I've ridden all over the that area) and if it is the road I am thinking of, it is fantastic!

I rode it most recently with pics in this thread, I can't see the pics at work, so can't confirm, but take a look:

I remember that trip of yours :thumbup Looks like your loop is to the north of Kooskia. Doesn't look like you were on 14 to Elk City...

If I end up going down to that area this weekend I will let you know what it is like. I am still deciding if I am going to do just 1 long day, or head down to Craters of the Moon National Monument and make it a 2 or 2 1/2 ride.

Fantastic road, one I enjoy even more than 12 over Lolo pass. Red river is a nice wide, shallow river great for camping along, and as 13 turns to gravel at the top, there isn't much traffic on it.
