Key question

I wanted to get another key made for my motorcycle and decided to get a Chinese knockoff one off of eBay (for looks of course). While the blade itself looks the same as the original key, the "shoulders" on the top and bottom of the blade are a lot farther forward than the original. I took the keys to Ace hardware to get it copied, but the person there said the blank wouldn't work and could get stuck in the ignition.

Is there any way that a lock smith could grind down those shoulders on the new key to match the old key, or would I need to buy another blank?

Sorry for the dumb question. Pic with the "shoulders" circled in red:

Thanks!

Buy a good new sharp file and file it down yourself. Or use a bench grinder for the bulk, and finish file. That is if you don't mind brass loading up your grinder wheel.

I know no more about keys than you do :)

So far as I can tell, the grinder grinds an identical shape to the key. I'd expect the shoulder to be ground to the right size.

Try another shop?

Knowing me, I'd fuck it up and the key would be useless.

Right? I thought the exact same thing, that the machine would cut it, but since I know nothing about keys other than how to use one I didn't want to say anything.

I was going to try another shop but figured I'd ask BARF before I tried an actual locksmith. Thanks!

I have nothing more to add, other than to note how you blocked out the teeth on your key ;) and that I noticed that both shoulders may need to be ground back.

There was a place online that you could give them your vin or some number and they would send you a ready-to-go key, like keys4uride.com

Can't be too careful on the BARFs. :twofinger.

Thanks for the link to the site though. Might look into that if I can't get this cut. I don't like the standard Ilco flat metal keys.

I've made hundreds of keys on the key machine at work, and it would definitely cut down those edges just like everything else. I would definitely try another shop.
