Just curious: How to get the one handed knee drag salute shot?

I've seen some sweet trackday pics of the one-handed knee drag and a lil salute. Do you guys just get lucky at the trackday and snap one of those at the perfect picture moment? Or are you planning it ahead?

Also, how do you guys pull that off? I don't think i'll ever try going that low in a one-hander, but just curious if there's any tips or tricks to it. Might try it at my last trackday. :twofinger

TIA

Well, you could just take a lap or two looking to see where the photogs are...

OR you could go the photo van and ask! They want to sell you a picture yes? AND if you know where they are in advance--you can pose! You get a picture, they get a sale--Capitalism!

Well ya, I can find the camera dudes.
Any tips on actually on pulling off a one handed deep lean without crashing?
I already put pretty much no weight on the bars in a lean so I assume it's just releasing the brake hand and maintaining everything else, right?

Why do you want to use the brake hand? Use the clutch hand. Your avitar suggests you shouldn't have a problem.

Ooops, just came back from a mountain bike ride. I meant *clutch* hand LOL
That wouldn't be a good turnout otherwise. :laughing

I'm going to recommend trying to get that shot on a left-hand corner.

Ok, this is good. Thanks. I wasn't sure which way would be easiest.

Uhm... if you weren't aware which turn direction would be the safe one, maybe this isn't something you should be trying just yet?
Otherwise, subsequent pics in the sequence could feature you dragging elbow... then shoulder... then hip, knee, butt, back, head... or cartwheeling bike...
Just don't want to see this end badly...

Thanks. I really appreciate hearing that.

Either turn feels fine to me really. I'm very comfortable leaning low, and not using having any weight on the handlebars. Might be something I try, but like I said, likely i'm not going to. Just may be fun for a nice photo before I have to sell my bike.

I sure don't plan to drag that many body parts though! :p
Although an elbow could be fun. :party

Start by waving to people while going through moderate corners on the street. If you're comfortable with that, flipping a birdie at the camera on the track (turn 2 at TH?) should be easy.

LOL ^^^

Time to visit the local playground and hop on the springy horse! :rofl

I actually found that a waverunner felt a little like a bike when hanging off it. Kinda random, but ya, thought i'd say it. :laughing.

I should be good then. :thumbup Definitely got my practice on the street. Riding got boring for me in the street so I had to keep it interesting. :laughing

Yeah, T2 would be great. Definitely my favorite corner. My last day is Laguna though and I really don't want to crash there so we'll see which corner feels nice. :ride

speaking as somebody who used to shoot at PIR, please don't let kodak courage cloud your judgment. my best friend thought he'd impress me one day when i was shooting in T9.

he stuffed into the front straight fence at about 125MPH. now he rides a wheelchair. and i don't shoot anymore.

Hmm. I haven't ridden our jet ski in nearly two years...

can you knee drag in water? :teeth

I'm having an excellent idea for an ATTGAT photo-op. :party

Got pretty close. But I was riding one of those 3 person monsters with a passenger. Definitely could be done. That would a good pic. :thumbup

(just don't fall in with leathers on.)

What the shit is this...
Practice. Start by being very conscious of your pressure on the bars in your chosen corner for a lap or two. Then try it with a very loose grip on your left hand, just kind of dangling your fingers around the bar. If that's comfortable, move your hand free of the bar next time around. If you're still doing ok (and the pfotog is still out there, go for it. Wave, flip them off, give a 4 if it's Joe and companytc.

+1 to cycle61's post. Once you get settled into the turn and have a consciously loose grip on the bars, it should be very easy to remove your left hand from the bar.

:laughing I remember being so proud of myself the first time I dragged knee through T14 at thunderhill with my left hand high in the air for the pit exit.
