I've been let off the hook a million times

Today I passed by:

* A Golden Gate Bridge Patrol going 70 in a 45
* A State Park Peace Officer going 65 in a 35
* Another Park Officer going 55 in a 30
* A CHP officer going 95+ in a 55

In each of these cases, I was riding within my limits and in a way that I judged to be safe for conditions. That being said, the letter of the law is what counts, and I was definitely breaking the law. But none of these officers pulled me over. I was sure that the CHP officer would. He basically hid himself on 101 South around a bend, apparently waiting for a speeder. If 95mph isn't enough for him to pursue me, than what speed is he looking for?

This has been my experience since I started riding 3 years and 25k miles ago. Every time I wonder:

* Did he not see me?
* Is he busy?
* Do Bay Area cops just let bikers do their thing?
* Are they thinking that it's not worth the risk of a chase?

I pulled over behind some stopped cars on Highway 1 a couple days ago to take a picture. Within a minute, there was a San Mateo County Sheriff there to write tickets for violating the COVID-related parking restriction. She told me to move on while she wrote ($1000!) tickets for the two cars, both with the driver in the car.

I understand that every officer and every department is different, and that no blanket statement can be 100% correct. But my impression is that cops in the Bay Area are cool with bikers and generously cut them a break. As a LEO, is there a policy like that in the Bay Area, official or otherwise? Or have I just been extremely lucky, with my luck destined to run out?

If you wondering where I'm riding, I usually go as far north as Stinson Beach, as far south as Woodside, and as far east as the Oakland Hills.

Back in the day the basic speed law said you could exceed the posted limit if it was safe for conditions. It was actually in the CVC. I used it on court once.

It worked both ways; you could be, and still can, be cited for under the posted limit if it is unsafe. I think.

I am going with upright bars and a textile suite or not bling leathers. It helps keep OG’s invisible to Johnny.

Your luck will run out and that is just the way it is.
If you are as lucky as I, that might be a long time. ;)

Like you said. Not cray cray.. just a bit of hey hey. :ride

I got pulled over in Park Presidio on my old Zuma 50. “Sir, your speed was approximately 45MPH” “it’s imposible, Officer, my speedo only goes to 40MPH”. He led me go. I had a pipe, racing variator and a Kevlar belt. :angel

This thread reminds me of how lucky I have been. Time to slow down. I have found that gray hair helps. :afm199

Well now I'm reconsidering switching out my gear as my bagging touring jacket may be making me look like less of a trouble maker. That said sitting astride a flashy red Ducati can't be helping my cause.

Just your lucky day. Either they're on a phone call, working on reports, or just don't give a damn while trying to look busy.

When they realize I've been riding longer than they've been alive it might help,. OR
At this ripe old age will a ticket in any way change my behavior?

Thinking back 40-yrs... I don't think I've ever gotten ticket on bike.

One obvious time, I was speeding 85 in 55 zone on 101S from school towards Santa Barbara. Cop pulls me over because of expired tags, didn't even mention anything about speeding. I had left my wallet with ID & insurance @ home! :(

He calls in with my name and turns out I have arrest-warrant out for me! So... what happens next?

He has me park bike off roadway bit and drives me to Sheriff's station. At station, I figured I'd be tossed in slammer for sure! Nope, he sends me to clerk countre so I can post bail! Luckily I had cheque-book with me in backpack. Then he drives me back to bike and lets me go!!! :)

Then 3-weeks later, I was speeding on 101N from Ventura back to Santa Barbara. Got pulled over again because I still haven't received sticker from DMV! I get off and start walking back and it's SAME cop! When he saw it was me, he just waved me off! :)

You're correct. I'm either wearing a completely black tracksuit, or understated black leather jacket with blue jeans. My S1000R has a proper bar, not clip ons.

However I am mainly relying on my outside knee in the tank scallop to stay on the bike in a corner. And I do tend to let my engine rev past 10k. (There's a clear difference in how aware other drivers are of my presence when compared to short shifting so I'm really not comfortable with the idea of keeping the noise down). Perhaps these signs don't scream "Pull me over!" as loudly as I thought they did.

Riddle me this.
I pulled someone over on a Ninja 650 in full gear the other day doing 92 in a 55. Clean record, early 20s. I gave him the website for an application for my department :laughing

I guess the guy on the Busa that got a 140MPH award on Hwy 4 yesterday would get an application to the FBI academy. :laughing
