Interesting Oil Filter fact

Maybe you all already knew this but it was a surprise to me.

Went to the local cycle center to pick up some oil and filters for some winter maintenance. I was going to change the oil and filter on the wife's EX500 and my CBR. While looking in the book for the correct filter I found that they both took the same model filter. :wtf

So out of curosity I checked the R6 and then the R1. They all take the exact same filter. Checked FRAM, K&N, and EMGO brands just to be sure. :cool

To be clear this is:

3 different makes (Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki)
3 different years ('95, '99, '02)
4 different engine sizes (500, 600, 900, 1000)

Same model oil filter. Going to save some $ by stocking up from online source from now on. arty

Yep. In addition, a LOT of Suzukis use HF/KN138 oil filters...

Yamaha filters are made by Denso. Honda uses Denso electrical components, exclusively. I wouldn't be supprised if Honda used a Denso filter. Yamaha uses Mitsubishi components but I don't think Mitsubishi makes a filter.

WalMart sells some bike filters.

Thier ST7317 fits my 2007 FZ1, and is rated very high in quality on the FZ forum.

The only thing that matters is the stud and the diameter. If you get one that is a bit longer, no problem as long as it fits in there.

I use a Ford 8a on my 2005 Dodge. Same mounting stud and diameter, but longer. Gives more filtering media and oil capacity.

Consider mounting some strong magnets on the filter itself to help trap metal particles.

IIRC there are three basic oil filters that fit most modern japanese bikes. go back a few years and there are many.

Yep. 3 bikes in a row that take the K&N 303 oil filter. Kinda nice to be able to run the same one on my cruiser, my 600, and my girl's literbike. :thumbup

AFAIK, and confirmed by the link that xgambit gave. Suzuki only used like 8 different filters. The list xgambit gave showed 6. And something like 45-55% of suzuki's used the "138" filter.
