I just want to see where you guys stand on this. No need for explanations.

If a poll has been done before, please link me to it. (I searched and failed)

I can't see myself stop lane splitting. One the reasons I don't want to leave California haha ( that and year-long riding season). If it became illegal, I would still do it and watch out for cops. If the cops got me, I would tell them it was safer than getting rear-ended by a cager.:twofinger

you gotta catch me to give me a ticket...SFPD doesn't chase much:teeth

Making something "illegal" only makes one more selective and perhaps attentive when doing it.

Take speeding for example.

I'd be more selective on when I did filter though.

It would be better because I wouldn't have to give a shit about being respectful. :teeth

Keep in mind there is another aspect to lanesplitting: the drivers.

If you were to ride in Oregon, where lanesplitting is not legal, drivers make no attempt to create space for riders to share/pass. And you will see more than a few swerve to block lanesplitters.

It is a huge debate up there about how to legalize lanesplitting and it is widely acknowledged that since drivers would not initially accept this change, there would be injuries.

I ride because I like to be on two wheels, so lane splitting is just a bonus. I try to obey the laws as much as possible and would mostly follow the law if it were changed. I've only done it a very few times in other states, and generally, the drivers that I passed were rather upset about it.

Never underestimate people in other states trying to "enforce" laws as they see them. Sanjuro has pointed out an important point to keep in mind.

I split lanes in Texas for years...not consistently, but when traffic was particularly bad. I got honked at a few times (once I was already past), but never swerved at, and my path was blocked no more often then it is here. Other drivers are pretty oblivious to our presence, legal or no.

You all say you'd keep splitting.
I've been in DC for 2 years and split at first. Not anymore

I started getting pulled over, and tickets issued. Its just not worth it folks. If it became illegal I'm fairly confident everyone would stop (besides the outlaw hooligans)

I've had people in CA try to enforce some non-existant law on me a few times. One even tried to either kill me, or just knock me off my bike, he might not have thought it all the way through past knocking me down in heavy traffic. If I'd had a gun, I would have popped a cap at his ass, thats how hard he was trying to get me.

:laughing

Hasn't seemed to impact drug use, and the penalties are much higher.

Luckily I don't commute on a bike... but I still occasionally get caught in traffic. I'd still split... but it would be a fairly rare event. I sincerely hope, though, that it continues to be legal here.
