You need 1000 subscribers and lots of watch time (minutes that people have watched your vids) before you can have ads on your Youtube channel. Aside from that, there isn't much extra to know about ads. Ads before an after the video are standard for short videos. Anything longer than 15min, you can think about putting ads in the middle.

If you arent approved for ads yet, you need to focus on getting your content noticed. Catchy titles, good thumbnails, proper tags, keywords in descriptions, hashtags. It all adds up.

Running a moderately successful YT channel is practically a full time job.

YT can demonetize you anytime also. One of my channels they demonetized it for some reason I can't remember right now and I had to reapply for monetization after a certain amount of time and it sucks having to apply again.

I had a channel that didn't have close to 1000 subs during the one of YT appocalypse. I had WAY more watch hours than was needed also. Anyway once I hit 1k I applied and it got approve eventually. But I wasn't making any revenue off of my videos for some unknown reason ads were not being displayed on my videos. I tried everything. After about a month or two bam it suddenly started showing ads. Then the other channel I was talking about earlier became demonetized and after it got approved again the ads started playing right away. So WTH!? That youtuber life =P
