Hypermoto or what?

So I am going to be buying a big in the next year and I want to do some research and get some ideas from the group. I love the looks and idea of a Hypermoto but I don't know how it would be as a daily bike.

How is it on a long ride? 400 miles +
how is it in traffic?
how is the maintenance on it?
What else should I look at?

Any info you can give would be great.

It sucks, it sucks, it sucks, Suzuki VStrom, Kawi Versys or Tuono.

My opinion, after riding a Hypermoto a couple of times (1100S).

Very comfortable, sit up seating position.
In Traffic, a weapon. You are above the cars. You've got the attack seating position.
Maintenance. From what I've heard, the 2 valve valve adjustment is a piece of cake. I had a 4 valve and it wasn't that bad. Not as bad as I had been led to believe.
I've heard that tank range was weak. My KTM goes 100 miles on a tank. I would guess that a hyper does more or less, the same. It doesn't bother me at all.
Price is coming down on them. I've seen a few for about $8000, with 5000 miles on them.

I woudln't mind having one.

I'm assuming you mean the Ducati 821cc Hypermotard. First, ride one, really, Ducati's are easy to get a demo on, that'll answer a lot of your questions.

It's a sumo, so comfort is not it's main goal. If you do 400+ miles in one day your ass is going to pay the price. So, the bike can do it, the question is, how much are you willing to put up with?

The 821 is liquid cooled, so it'll be fine in traffic. Sumo's give a good view in traffic too.

The 821 is better as far as valve intervals are concerned, and regular maintenance on the motor is simple. I can only compare it to the 1098 motor I had on my Streetfighter and the basic maintenance was easy.

Are you stuck on having a performance Sumo? The DRZ most likely is not going to fit the bill without some major mods, but maybe the Husky 701 would do, basically the KTM 690 rebranded.

I am stuck on a performance one. I have a crf250l right now that I use for dual sport rides and its an amazing bike. I like the idea of sitting up right and having performance still. I can do a sport bike again but I would like something different. I like the style of the Hypermoto. I am thinking a 2015 Hypermotard SP next year so maybe pick one up used a year old. I wont do a ton of 400 + mile days but I will do them.

I'm about 4months and <1k miles on my '08 HM1000, so my 2c:

>How is it on a long ride? 400 miles +

Its more comfy than I expected with a wide seat, but tank range is terrible. The fuel light came on at 75miles this morning, I've seen as low as 65. Not a good thing, perhaps later models are different.

>how is it in traffic?

Heavy-ish dry clutch is not ideal. Rides high so good visibility but its bars are quite wide.

>how is the maintenance on it?

Decent intervals for valves/belts/general maintenance. VERY expensive if you have a dealer do it, reasonable if you do it yourself but information is patchy and not nearly as common as other brands.

>What else should I look at?

KTM950SM, KTM SMT, Aprilia Dorsoduro

But what I should've said is the HM is a frekin blast to ride, amazing engine and handling. I'd buy it again in a second.

I have a 14 Hypermotard sp. it sucks on the freeway I don't care what everyone says. I go on the freeway once in a while from castro valley to san Ramon. There is no wind protection and Ducati wants upper 300s for a small carbon fiber windshield. The lack of wind protection is what bugs me. If you fit a clear ginormous windscreen then the bike doesn't look as appealing. But other than that, the service intervals are a lot better now. It's a blast to ride in the canyons. Also, I can get around 100 on a tank. I rode sport bikes mainly and I have no issue with the seat what so ever.

If you're really in the market to buy a hypermoto just have cash handy and go try them all out. See if you really want one after the test ride.

Wuss. I have a 690 duke and have no issues with windblast. The duke really sucks on the Highway cause it has 1 cylinder. I would guess that the superretard gets less vibes and run smoother with 2 .

^ yeah that dude is being a drama queen about highway. I've only owned bikes with no wind protection and I think they are just fxxking dandy. Go on freeway all the time.

Last group ride was in Santa Cruz and I live in 94603. No problem. But I don't do 400 mile days.

Yeah, get a demo. I had an 1100, but it's a different beast, and I'm not sure my experiences are relevant to your question. Regarding RGal's suggestion of the Hyperstrada, check with BARF member, mlm (AKA George) who rented one for our UK and IOM EuroBARF last year. He appeared to enjoy the hell out of it. And yeah, we did some big days.

One small caveat: The decision to buy a brand new Euro bike (ANY Euro bike - Aprilia through Vespa) should take into consideration your experience with the dealer. There's a reasonable probability that you and your dealer are going to get to know one another better than you might expect. Pick your dealer carefully.

There is not much that is really a direct comparison on the hyper. You really either go up in bike motor wise and weight wise i.e tuono, superduke, etc or you go down in weight to a truer tard.

Bikes like this arent really well rounded, dont confuse that statement with it not being able to do alot of different things, but they are honestly just made to give you smiles. I did a 650 mile day on my tuono and at the end of the day i would have been tired on any bike. Its the time that you are on the good roads that count.

I wouldn't bat an eye to ride a hyper as my only rig. I rode one before I bought my tuono, the only reason i bought the tuono was I got a better deal.

Yes I am a drama queen. Thanks for the insults. I just wanted to give my personal feedback to the op. Glad your opinions are different.
