Hey there neighborinos, new rider in Oakland here. Got a '78 Yamaha SR500 just over a month ago and have been slowly exploring the Bay.

Went on Redwood + Palomares road for the first time last weekend, looking forward to a few more.

Not sure how to post an image, but it basically looks like this (only dustier and with a different mirror setup): https://www.mecum.com/lots/LV0118-321451/1978-yamaha-sr500/

Some back story: took the MSF over the summer and got my license back in ~Septemberish. Bought the bike in SF and first practiced in the AT&T parking lot a few times, then around the city, before spending a Saturday riding down to San Jose, and back up through Hayward to Oakland. Streets / expressways only.

Still quite nervous about taking it on freeways / bridges, likely give it another month or so. I have a good jacket with backplate / shoulder / elbow armor, still need some non-Home Depot gloves and maybe upgrade my boots from doc martens at some point.

My speedometer / odometer doesn't work, so definitely looking forward to taking it to Moto Guild and learning to work on it myself eventually.
Another thing that happens, which I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or is a mechanical issue: when coming to a stop / intersection on an uphill, I sometimes stall out while still keeping the clutch engaged. It doesn't always happen, and I've learned that giving it revs while holding the clutch can prevent this, but it does sometimes 'pop' when this happens. Anyone know what the issue might be, maybe fuel line / idle speed?

Anyway, stoked to join the forum and would be happy to ride with someone on a weekend! :ride

Enjoy the community of moto nuts!

Hit up the garage forum to ask your mechanical questions.
Some knowledgable people there likely can offer suggestions.

Thanks! I should note this forum has been super helpful so far. Before hitting my first twisties I read about the pace, successfully navigated them in 3rd gear (maybe did 4th a few times when it was clear and straight, and the engine was asking for it, and 2nd when going downhill on curves, just to be ready to stop).

Can't wait to get over my fear or bridges / freeways!

Welcome

Now the bad news. This place is filled with twisted humor and curmudgeons. And when you came in, you are in for good.

Welcome. You're riding an actual Classic bike. Nice !
Big singles can just kinda burp and stall at stops. Make sure you're carburation is set good. Take a look at the spark plug. If it's black, you're probably rich.

Ah, that is a sweet bike. Treat it with the respect it deserves. Which means mostly ride.

Welcome! Moto guild is a great resource for learning how to work on your bike. I'm not far from Oakland and I'm usually out riding on weekends, just let me know when and where. See you out there!!
