How do I keep video clips from starting on a web page?

I am not a techie, so be tolerant of my ignorance.

I hate that video clips start automatically when I click on a webpage (i.e., news stories, etc.). Most times I would rather read the story and not listen to some idiot blather about it. Plus, there is always an ad video first. Annoying.

Is there some setting, somewhere, that I can click that will only allow the videos to start if and when I click on the arrow?

I have two standard pc systems running windows, and google chrome as my browser. I also have a Samsung smartphone running Android.

Help me Rhonda, Help me get her out of my out of my web!!

Don't go to websites that do that.

Unpopular opinion here, but don't run adblock. The journalism business is scraping by as it is, and those ads are one of the few revenue streams that keep these sites afloat.
