Any barfers do car audio repairs and/or install?

I need...

* 2 x JL Audio 10W6's to have the foam repaired
* 1 x PPI Art Series A600.2 amp repaired (one channel is out, diagnosed as bad hybrid card)
* install of sub box + amp + wiring into my car

Anyone who can do one or more of these, please let me know and send quotes.
- OR if anyone has any suggestions, those are greatly appreciated as well!!

Thanks! :teeth

for the speakers, unless they are high end competition grade (which would surprise me since those are usually round) its probably cheaper just to buy a new set. i have done car audio and would HELP YOU with installing the beat for free. well, as long as beer is included :teeth

PPI Art Series, very nice. A buddy had one back in the day, I think it was a 600x2. Serious, serious power.

They are a really good set that would be hard to find replacements for. There are refoam/repair kits for about $24 for a set of two, but I was hoping I could find someone with experience to do it, before I tried my hand at it. Either way, these are great speakers worth salvaging and I will do my best to do that before replacing them. :thumbup

Yes, definitely has more than enough power to run both subs off one channel and it still sound amazing; a billion times better most amps out there. I just would prefer to get that amp fixed to ensure I can keep it running for many more years to come... they just don't make them like they used to! :nerd

Thats how you stick it!
Its been a while but there was a guy at castroville auto stereo that repaired amps in house - he did good work. I do not know if he is still around or if the shop is still around. I think his name was Ricardo.

I assume you mean you have 2 JL 10W6s, as I don't believe JL ever made any 10X6 subwoofers (at least not any that would be worth saving vs replacing). That being said, a new pair of 10w6s will cost you less in the long run than having them refoamed, and refoamed/reconed speakers will have a higher likelyhood of failing again and will not sound as good (since unless you are having JL do the work, it will never be to factory tolerances again).

As for the amp, the Art series was a decent line, but there are better amps currently available (depending on your budget). But if you can find someone to fix it really cheaply, that may be the way to go. But consider that any money you spend to repair it will never make it last as long as it was originally intended. There are other components inside the amp that will only take a beating so long before they give out. The fact that part of your amp has already failed leads me to believe another part is not far behind.

I've installed quite a few car stereo systems, and it's never fun, but if you need tips or advice when it comes time to install, you can shoot me a pm and I can try to help.

I might need some help too. Anyone have any experience w/ Navigation & DVD systems? My car is currently equipped with both and I've been reluctant to change to an aftermarket deck because I didn't want to lose the DVD & Nav functions. The car is an Acura MDX. I already have a deck (Pioneer DEH-P4900I). I know how to hook up the sub, amp, and run wiring, I just didn't want to mess with the deck.

Sorry for the threadjack :teeth

Good eye! Yes, 10W6's... now changed in original post, thanks for pointing the typo out! :teeth

I have another Xtant Amp too, which I may just use... or maybe I'll just run that PPI into the ground first, since it did sound pretty damn sweet :cool

Some folks have been recommending the 10w6V2's... maybe if they fit in my current sub box I can just get a new set.... we'll see! So far, refoam quotes have been $50-55/ea for local repair. Or $35 ea for refoam in FL (so add about $20 shipping each way for both). Blah.

Thanks for your suggestions and input! Much appreciated :teeth

Just do a ghetto patch on the foam surround and give it a try. You have nothing to lose, it's already torn. Patch it on the front and back of the tear with a small piece of duct tape or vinyl tape. As long as there's no air leak it'll work. It's only some sub bass anyhow.

If the foam is really bad it will need replacement. It takes about 2 hours each to scrape away the old foam and glue on the new ones. The glue is "special" they sell you a lot more than you need.

The foam is usually really thick on the JLs. Did it get punctured or totally rot away?

NO NO NO NO NO NO. Your talking about a subwoofer, that has a DAMN precise voice coil gap. You misalign that and you'll fry it for sure. Which depending on the amp, well might take the amp with it. NOT worth the risk.

Actually a new 12w7 would out do the 10w6 pair if driven properly.

As for the amp, the PPI is indeed a classic. As nice as it is, I doubt your going to find it worth it to repair that amp (or its card if that IS the issue). Then it would be to replace it with something nicer. (I hate to say that).
I ran a PPI Art series LIQUID cooled 600x2 into a Trio of 2 10w6's and 12w6 at 2ohm. :teeth

$50 per, is NOT bad for a re-surround job. However, the JL's have a different surround setup the some subs, and most definitely a longer throw then an average loudspeaker.

I too did install work.

Let me know if you need some help. I work cheap too. :teeth

I do have at least 1 BARF reference of how careful, clean and thorough I am, install wise.

How bad is the foam surround on the subs? To save money, you might be able to patch. But if money is no object, I'd go for a better single woofer like the w7 already mentioned.
