Help setting up e-mail

OK. Let's say there is a machine and the user uses AOL. :bigbarf (I hate AOL) So you build them a web site and you want to set them up with a POP3 e-mail account with them@their_new_website.com. How would you go about doing this. I need it for two scenarios.

1) setting up access through their AOL account

2) Setting up something like Outlook, Netscape, Eudora etc.

Thanx. Feel free to ask any questions if you need to. I'm pretty computer literate but just have never done anything like this before.

Thanx again.

That all depends... who hosts their DNS? They'll need MX records pointing at a willing server, which then can use virtuser tables to point anything@theirdomain.com to an account which is auto-forwarded to their AOL account.

That's how thesteveco works - as will bayarearidersforum.com.

How about outgoing e-mail? when they send they want the recipiant to see the e-mail coming from user@theirdomain.com.

OK. Let's use me as an example. www.bobx3.com If you e-mail to bigbutthead@bobx3.com it will be forwarded to my home e-mail address but if I hit reply it will come from my home e-mail address. How would I set it up to come from bigbutthead@bobx3.com (assuming bigbutthead@bobx3.com is an actual e-mail that's been set up and not a catch all or alias.)

Change the From: field? [/sarcasm]

It's that simple? Really? I'm sorry, this is all new to me so...:rolleyes OK, here is another problem. They had an e-mail set up where the STMP was associated with the domain they had hosted. So,

incoming e-mail = looser@abcwebsite.com
return address = looser@abcwebsite.com
incoming mail server = abcwebsite.com
SMTP server = abcwebsite.com
User name = looser
Password = ********

they are switching over to www.xyz.com and that host does not have a SMTP mail server. So I have to use their ISP in the SMTP right?

If so I'm screwed cause they have no idea how they are set up. I asked them who their ISP was and they said "I don't know". I guess they think the internet magically comes into their office.:rolleyes
