those hondas are do for the valve check/adjust every 16k, so it will depend if the 1st one was performed. as far as the jumpy idle i'd be looking for something electrical & possible with the reg/rec.

thanks for your reply. the charging system works perfectly, however, i have a dual camera system and a cig charger for my phone on the bike connected directly to the battery.
tnx

Seventeen year old bike? Jumpy idle?

From free to expensive I would look at (after disconnecting all accessories):

1. Vacuum leak(s)
2. Corrosion on electrical connections.
3. Fouled fuel circuits.
4. Weak coil pack on one of the cylinders. (Which then seems alright when the rpms come up and the alternator overpowers the weakness when running off of just the battery.)

I agree with Pushrod and just wanted to add the fuel pump has gone out on 80% of the fireblades that I have owned at some point and the rectifier as well.
Spray a little carb cleaner around your carb and vacuum lines to see if there is a surge in rpms. Also check the actual plug for the rectifier under the rear fairing and make sure it is not getting to hot, look for signs of melting. They are cheap and easy to replace. Lastly the fuel pumps is a fairly easy job and if you have a stock one just think about how much fuel has gone through it. Again though I totally agree to disconnect the accessories prior to checking anything else.
Hope you figure it out.

Agreed. Check the free stuff first. Could be anything from crap gas & the resulting carb trouble to loose connection to the coil.

Could be as simple as a carb sync is in order, or a bad plug.

Measure following:

- FPR, measure vacuum at FPR with warmed up engine. Use vacuum T-fitting to keep FPR connected. What is vacuum reading?

- fuel-pressure in rail with FPR vacuum hose connected

- fuel-pressure in rail with FPR vacuum hose disconnected

- TPS, verify idle-switch is closed when throttle released and idling

- battery voltage at idle
