Heads up display Helmet

I would like to see rpm, speed, what gear you are in also displayed.
I don't see why this technology is not already available.

It is available and has been for awhile. However, it's cost prohibitive. The new mercedes even has infra-red displays available which makes driving in the fog much nicer, but that's a 150k car. About 10 years ago a friend of mine was trying to license the technology for HUD helmets and it was far too expensive to reach a reasonable price point. So he tried to engineer it himself, and that was even worse.

I bitch and moan about $600+ Aria helmets that are worth it (given what they are protecting) but man, that's a hit. Hard to imagine shelling out 2k for a helmet.

I don't think the world wants yet another tiny computer with a specialized set of features that nobody really needs or has time to figure out, and will become obsolete in a few months.

What I'd love is something that can serve as an alternate interface to my Android phone while riding and provide all the features that the phone has. But no way I'm paying $2000 for even that.

there isn't ANYTHING stopping anyone form making a small LED hud for a helmet now for personal use.

my beef is the 5 year shelf life on helmets. thats $400 a year for this helmet. I don't see the value.

Speed I can understand in a helmet. RPM and gear though, might be too much info really. its one thing to have them available to look at on the cluster, but another one altogether to have live in front of your face.

I got to test a wearable computer for a while. (pre Google glass) and honestly it made things just way too hectic. as cool as the idea was, it was just too much to process.

I'm all for tech, and I'd really like to see this happen, but the timing is premature, and the price is too high.

This. Nice and simple so I don't have to take my eyes off the road. I could care less about maps and navi and bullshit like that. Just gets in the way and is a distraction.

Agreed. The best solution would be something that's portable from one helmet to another. The Recon Snow already does this for skiing/snowboarding

Their new Jet appears to be a competitor to Google Glass. Given how customizable these will be, I'm sure there will be plenty of apps for motorcycling applications in fairly short order.

Seriously.

A friend of mine has a Lexus SUV with night-vision HUD. Why the hell hasn't BMW started using this on their RT?

Lucky me...I don't want any of it.

Speed? Like I have no idea what speed I'm going and the conditions allow?

Gear your in? Like you don't have a clue what the throttle response is?

RPM? Really? The engine talks to me, Tells me, this.

I don't want to be looking at Data...I'm 100% into the road, and safe zone around me.

The cool factor aside, I consider this technology at best useless and worst a serious distraction.

I knew the manufacturer would compare it to IHADSS, the Apache heads-up display, which requires weeks of training to use.

Seeing my speed pasted on my visor may be neato, following a map near impossible. I suppose I'll just see arrows and "left turn coming up in 400 feet" messages.

But weaker riders may really struggle.

This.

But that would either require the manufacturers to get together and adopt a standard for data communication, or you'd need an adapter to plug in to each bike that is compatible with the system.

The first seems unlikely, the second expensive and limited - you'd only get a unit for the most popular bikes due to cost / demand.

Could be a cool project.......

I'm looking more into Recon Instruments' Jet sunglasses... or maybe a slimmer version 2 after that. It's supposed to be out later this year.
