Decompression valves have appeared on bikes much more recent than 1972. My 2001 WR250F had one.

I had to look that up.
Compression release back in the day just opened a valve in the cylinder head, slowed the bike and made a cool noise. Today they are used to help start thumpers, I think. My Black Dream has one. I have not used it.

Used to be pretty much standard on flat-trackers, don’t know if they still run them but great for no-brakes decel.

Just get a high compression thumper or V-twin. Either will have strong engine braking.
