Has anybody dyed their gear?

I'm curious if anybody has experience dyeing some of their gear or just certain parts.

I'm just casually shopping some suits and was thinking how much I would like the suit more if certain parts were another color, black in particular.

Please spare me the teasing vanity posts. :twofinger

My only experience is putting on my gloves, and then rubbing my fingers in a can of black shoe polish and rubbing my hands together. It made the gloves look great, but because the leather was thin it dyed my hands black too.

It might work better on thicker leather. I now use non-colored leather treatment to make the gloves last longer, and to remove the sweat salts.

I had an old horsehide motorcycle jacket from the 60's that was a weird orange color. I died it black using regular shoe dye. It took two bottles and a lot of time, but it looked pretty good. After it was dry, I treated it with Sno-Seal waterproofing. The black never came off and it lasted several years before it started to fade, at which point I just re-dyed it.

I'm not sure how it would work on today's gear. Sometimes some of the parts are plastic, and sometimes the dye is actually paint. So be careful and always do a test patch on some unnoticeable portion first. And be careful! That stuff is gnarly and will stain anything it gets onto.
