I learned this lesson the hard way. When I was like 9 my mom was working at a day care. They had hamsters and one had recently given birth. The kids were messing with mom and picking up the babies. We leave for nap come back and it’s a mass massacre. She’s killed all her babies and was in the middle of eating one when I ran to my mom to tell her.
I guess the scent of humans was viewed as a threat so she eliminated that threat.

Doesn't have to be young or 'spouses', whatever spouses means for pets:laughing. Two hamsters living in the same cage, then yeah.
I had one of my hamsters eat the other when I was a kid. Two males part of the same litter. Brought home at the same time to avoid territorial behavior of introducing a new roommate later. I think I forgot to put food in the cage before going to school. Came home to find one chowing down on the other, half his skull exposed. Never had a problem with them getting along before then.
Fairly disturbing when you're in elementary school and your other hamsters died from just being old.

18-5003. CANNIBALISM DEFINED — PUNISHMENT. (1) Any person who wilfully ingests the flesh or blood of a human being is guilty of cannibalism.
(2) It shall be an affirmative defense to a violation of the provisions of this section that the action was taken under extreme life-threatening conditions as the only apparent means of survival.

They're fun, low maintenance, and don't take up a lot of space.
I don't know any other kids that had a situation like mine. Forgetting to drop a few food pellets in the cage was just a really bone head move. It's not like you forget some food and they go full cannibal in an hour.

how the hell does 1 hamster consume their entire litter and their spouse in 1 feast?
