Gear tech question

3 pings and a zing
I've been thinking about changing my gear ratio (16/42= 1 : 2.625) and had a question: If you had the same ratio (numeric value) does the size of the c.s. sprocket make a difference? In other words, does a smaller diameter c.s. gear have any benefit all other things being the same?
Seems like a smaller lever arm (smaller gear) will put less load on the shaft but more on the teeth. I heard the pro's like to run a larger c.s. but I'm not sure why.
