Fz09 suspension

I’m looking to upgrade my suspension in the next few months for my 2016 fz09. Anyone got an fz09 with upgraded suspension and willing to let me try/give me advice for the best bang for buck? There’s so much info online but I don’t even know where to start/options. It’s mainly for the front forks as I have an ofternwrket rear shock on order already.

i had a '14 (no longer have it) i went with an ohlins rear shock & stiffer race tech springs in the front. I wish i went with cartridges in the front over just springs but i'm a heavier rider (215lb with gear). I have a buddy who sells Penske on the east coast and recently released some new updated goodies but i would say it's more on the pricier side than the cheap fix it side.

Really depends on what you want to spend - happy to take it to PMs if you want to talk more

It's not my fault...
When I had my '14 FZ-09, I did a budget build on the suspension. On the forks, went with heavier springs and gold valving from Racetech. For the rear, I went with a ZX6RR shock.

I think it best to start with, do you have a budget in mind.

And also understanding what riding are you going to be doing? Around town, twisties, track, or all of the above?

Upgrades can be had for as little as $400-$500 and could go up to about $2500-$3000.

I ordered an ohlins rear shock from dan kyle for a pretty good deal lol. i've been reading about the front fork options like stoltec and some other guy from the fz09 forum but dont really feel like sending out my front forks but i may just have to.

personally found the ohlins shock to be fantastic -though i didnt compare to any other suspension offers - anything is a significant upgrade over stock.

I did a heavier for oil in the front which was a mistake - rebound (even with it dialed all the way out) was still too much and i would still get some pogoing under hard braking followed by acceleration through a turn.

I also went with .95 springs and likely should have done 1.00 or 1.05 (but my buddy who weighed less than me was upgrading and i got his springs on the cheap and figured the .95 were better than nothing).

I'm not a great rider - people could and did ride the fz09 much harder than I did but I rode my buddies bike with the andreatti (spelling?) cartridges and I still felt some pogoing in corners. The chassis to me feels like more of an issue to the handling than the suspension (though the suspension upgrades help immensely).

It really comes down to what you want to use it for - it was great for 80% of occasions i threw a leg over - it wasn't a track bike but i didnt expect it to be - still had fun at the track anyway.

I miss the power over my street triple r now but the triumph feels more composed even with stock suspension - i think part of that has to do with the chassis and better fueling too but i'm getting off topic now.

If your talking about forks by Matt, he did my 16 fj09 forks and I am very happy with them. I didn't want to ship mine either but would use him again. I put my forks in a hard gun case, it worked great.

What up man. Yeah ohlins rear shock and adjusted the front forks to full stiff. I am still JUst researching all my options for the front before I do anything. I haven’t done too much researching on the 2017s but I think they’re supposed to be a better set up than the prior years out of the box.

The FZ09 is easy to upgrade the suspension in building block steps:

1) install correct springs for your weight. About $100 each front and rear and is required for any additional suspension mods.

2) use heavier than stock fork oil to increase your damping functions in the fork ($15)

3) use a better rear shock like a zx6/10 shock. Less than $100 off eBay. Install your correct rear spring from #1 above.

4) set up the proper sag with you sitting on the bike.

5) ride it to set up the damping front and rear

6) ride it for a while

If that is not good enough, then look at an aftermarket shock and new fork cartridges.

As for riding someone else's bike, that doesn't work very well because their bike is set for their weight, riding style and personal feel. All of which are different from yours.

Taze away, Yana...
I have no idea how I didn't see this before. I'm not really a good source for middle of the road fixes because I learned a long time ago not to fuck around with shitty suspension. I went full K-Tech 30mm cartridges and K-Tech Rear shock sprung and setup for my track riding style. Totally love the bike since the upgrades and have absolutely no issues hanging in A with the big kids.

I would talk to Jim at Catalyst Reaction. He knows this bike VERY well, and has lots of different setup options depending on what you're looking for/money you can spend.

Good luck!!
