FZ-07 cam timing guru help

Working on a 2016 FZ-07 for a friend. Did a valve adjustment as per a online factory shop manual. Measured clearances at TDC compression stroke at mark on alt rotor for #1 cylinder. Ex cam lobes pointing to front and just above plane of head. Intake cam lobes pointing toward rear and slightly below plane of head. Found all exhaust valves 4 to 5 thou which is about half of what’s called for which is roughly .009 to .011”. Intakes were all within spec. So adjusted and went to retime cams and when I referred to the manual it showed the intake cam lined up with the hash mark -I pointing to rear of the bike. If I put the cam in like that the intake lobes for #1 will be pointed to the front as in before the intake stroke. To add to my confusion when I checked on the MT-07/FZ-07 owners group a member had posted a how to do the valve adjust and referred to setting to TDC for #1 cylinder on the clutch side. That would be #2 cylinder unless he meant clutch lever. And his pics showed the ex cam lobes pointing at the intake cam lobes. Anyone done this and can tell me where the cams should be positioned regarding lobe position on #1 cylinder. There’s more but I want to see if someone has done this and what they experienced. Help please!

:facepalm:facepalmYep. RTFM. So you measure clearance at TDC on compression but if cams removed for adjustment, you are supposed to set #1 at TDC on EXHAUST stroke. This make it easier to bolt down the holders as no valves are active. I feel kinda stupid as I could see its near impossible to assemble with #2 intakes full open and the intake cam mark was 180 out. After you measure clearances the Yam manual refers you to cam removal in the engine section. I totally missed where it said to position #1 on the exhaust stroke. Lesson learned and only cost me a bunch of time.

TDC #1 cylinder at top Compression stroke. Intake valve was closed for a half revolution. The Sparkplug is going to ignite. The exhaust value is a half revolution away from being opened.

The Crankcase timing marks will rotate twice for every one revolution of the camshaft.

Yep totally aware of crank turns to cam turns. It was just my usually working with 4 cylinder bikes where the cams reference TDC on compression. With 4 cylinders, the cams are somewhat neutral so they don’t move try to move when bolting the holders. With the FZ the #2 cylinder intakes are full open and trying to set the chain and bolt down the cam holder is impossible. So leaving #1 at TDC and timing the cams for exhaust stroke puts them in a neutral position and you can easily bolt down your holders. You still measure on the compression stroke top for each cylinder but as it’s a cross plane design you turn the crank 270 degrees and they furnish no reference mark. But as I said it was my own fault for skimming past the cam removal section where they say to position for TDC on the exhaust stroke. Eh just a lesson learned about always reading the freakin manual.

Service Manual can't be beat. Youtube Video are helpful.There is tips the manual doesn't mention. These valve clearance adjustments have a few tricks to make things easier.
One is marking the chain and Cam gear to match up during assembly.
Another is after loosening the camshafts. Use a Zip tie to lock in one of the camshafts with the Chain. Accomplishes two things it keeps that camshaft synced to the chain. Next it keeps the chain from falling into the engine case.
Using both these Tips the camshafts are easily synced to the chain. Can use the Manual to double check.
