Fvcking DMV

Whatever that means
So I'm in the middle of title transfer online and they asked me to send the original title, smog and other pertinent paperwork along to them to wrap everything up after they took my money.

Of course they lost my paperwork. I tried to get it resolved through email but I keep getting "it's not my department" responses.

Tried calling them, was on hold waiting to speak to someone for an hour and a half till they closed.

So how would you suggest I blow my brains out? Kidding aside does anyone have any DMV connections or know how that might help me get this sorted?

Get there early and you can speak to actual people.

Even if you show up at a DMV office, wait in line and talk to a clerk, lost paperwork is lost paperwork.
I needed to straighten out a registration renewal on a bike that I had recently transferred. They kept sending me notices that I never paid for the renewal and if I didn't pay the renewal, fine and interest, it would go to collections. I had the new registration certificate and the sticker already on the plate. I went to DMV 1 hour before they opened. I got right in but the clerk kept telling me I had to call DMV and also email them a copy of the cancelled check. Unfortunately, I used a cashiers check so there is no cancelled check. I told her I had been calling 2X a day for 5 days. I finally asked to speak to a supervisor. She was able to straighten it out. Lesson learned-take pictures of all paperwork sent to DMV.

I hate to come in here and do this....but.

Today, through AAA, I transferred title, got new stickers in about 10 minutes. I then went to my agent and got the truck insured. I started the process at about 10am, and was on my way to pick up the truck to drive it home at about 1.

Fuck working with the government when you can do it through a contractor. AAA is worth every penny for shit like that.

Sucks to lose important documents like that and then have no recourse for them fixing the problem. I avoid the DMV like the plague.

But it just so happens I had the day off today. Decided to waste some of it at the DMV to finally get my REAL ID. Last time I went was in 2007 I believe. Did the online setup last night where I told them all about me and my current ID and what documents I will bring with me to show I am really who I say I am. Get to the DMV and after being screened for the C19 (which was handled well enough) I wait a short time until the lady working asks what I was there for. I say to get my REAL ID and she says they aren't processing them until January unless current ID expires before the end of 2020. I said, OK, but I also need to update the addresses on my vehicles since I moved recently. She says I have to do it online. I tell her I have tried a couple times but the site immediately tells me I have to do it in person. I said it told me to file a DMV 14. She says they don't use them anymore and she can't give me one. I said well how am I going to get my registration renewal notices when my mail isn't being forwarded and I can't update my address. She says do it online. I tell her if she doesn't believe what I am telling her about it not allowing me to update my address online she can watch me login to my account on my phone and I can show her that it won't let me change address online. She just gives me the stink eye.

So I tell her I can't wait till January to change addresses for my vehicles (probably not true as my next reg. renewal will probably be sent in March) so how else can I effect an address change. She says the only way other than online is to pretend I lost my plates or tags and to fill out a DMV 156 getting new stuff issued and updating the address in the process (and I assume paying more fees). I am not happy at this point but I put up with this nonsense and she goes to get me the forms. When she comes back I step away a bit to read the form. Of course at the very top of that form I read that it says in bold, If your address has changed, submit the appropriate Change of Address form. I look up at her and say something like isn't that the DMV 14?

So at this point I am talking to her in a way that got the attention of the guy who checked me in. He pulls me aside, says the DMV did the same thing to him, he works there and can't believe how broken the agency is, and said he would go get me a DMV 14 and I could fill it out then he would put it in the right spot for me, but don't tell her about it. He said they have been destroying the form inside and he knew where there were a few sitting. Sure enough 30 seconds later he comes out with one. So I went back to my car and filled it out then wandered back to the front and gave it to the guy. I didn't catch his name but I should have so I could give him a shout out on Yelp or Google or something. It did feel a bit like Good Cop Bad Cop or like I was on a hidden camera and it was all a joke.

I do wonder how I could answer questions for 15 minutes online to include that my license isn't near expiration (exp is 2022) and that I just want to get my REAL ID like the state has been asking us to do for years now, and it couldn't mention to me that they aren't currently being processed for anyone who isn't expiring in December 2020.

I asked the woman will I need to go through the online application again in January and she said no it is good for a year. I feel like that will come back to bite me though. I assume by January they will have decided not to process REAL ID for anyone who isn't expiring in January 2021. I checked the DMV website today and still don't see anything about being able to get a REAL ID only if my ID expires this month, so I am not even sure she wasn't just lying to me.

CA DMV is the most horrendously run bureaucracy I have ever interacted with and I deal with lots of them all the time. Other DMVs in other states get a bad rap because they are in the same line of work. I'm sure some of them suck but I can't imagine anything worse than what we have here, especially considering the fees we pay. My only other real experience was with the NM MVD and there is simply no comparison.

Get that!
Same situation here. I only assume someone lost the title I sent in but DMV won't and can't confirm if my original docs are in a mail pile or not. They replied via email saying it can take up to 90 days since they're swamped.

So I got a hold of them on the phone and apparently they are working on documents sent on oct 17 and I sent it a few days after that so they told me to sit n spin in the meantime and they will get to it.

The person was much more polite than that though.

Sounds right, and chances are it's not lost. I did two virtual transfers. One took forever the other not so much.

Well this is what set my expectations.

I did a prior title transfer maybe two weeks prior to this one that is taking forever and it took only 3 days after I sent the paperwork.

I bought a car, when I bought it didn't provide my proof of insurance, I literally drove it home off the lot and added it to my policy online when I got home.

Weeks later I get the DMV bill for registration? I'm like wait. I look through the paperwork and sure enough, I paid well over $600 on the purchase of the car for the registration? I'm not really that upset enough to call the place back and say WTF why did you charge me and now I have to pay it again?

I think they must have had the car a while and that's the registration they paid when they acquired the vehicle or it's back fees and now it's up again...Whatever. Not going to care about it love the car etc.

Well, then weeks later get another DMV notice. No insurance provided and your registration is on hold? So I go online and it wants me to pay an additional $10 to provide them with proof..

I go to login and provide proof. Ok, fill out the form, send an email AND just in case, I print out the proof of the payment and completion I sent it all via mail with the proof of insurance and a handwritten letter spelling out how broken the process is but here is my proof of insurance in triplicate, form, email and now snailmail should be good to go right?/...nope

I keep getting letters about every 2 weeks no proof of insurance your registration is now expired? WTF!!!

Frustrating and 2 more letters....I keep going online and it says there is no outstanding proof of insurance...

Then finally getting you are now in big trouble if you get pulled over this license plate and car are not insured and your registration is revoked letter... a letter shows up 2 days later saying it's all complete and done. :wtf

Gawd what a waste of paper and time on their end even if it's automated, they are just wasting postage and paper and ink on this crap.

:thumbdown

Oh and I also am still waiting for my personalized plate I ordered where the fuck is that DMV??
