Freeway speeds lately?

I think freeways should be like the movie speed. If you cannot go under 80 mph or else you will explode. bombs will be installed on all cars. I'm putting this into legislation.

^ This.

So, I'm not a usual commuter, but I run errands occasionally and go to and from Treasure Island a few times a month. I've noticed lately that the off-commute freeway speeds have made a pretty serious jump. I used to be able to settle in to the #1 Lane and roll along at 75-80mph. That speed kept me in the faster group of traffic, but not blowing by everyone.
In the last couple months, I'm seeing speeds closer to 85-90mph. If I go slower than 80, I find myself being tailgated and passed on the right.
Relevant info: most of my time is spent on 680, 24, 580, and 880.

So this is you?

Well, if you are getting tailgated and passed on the right you are failing to maintain good lane discipline. Lane 1 is for passing. You should always be moving over for faster traffic not camping.

Honestly, speed limits outside of city limits are just dumb.

As for those roads, my experience is different than yours.

  • 680 is one of the slowest. One because it is always dead slow from San Ramon to Concord. The first part from Dublin to San Ramon is a bit fast but most of 680 is in the 70-75 range.
  • 24 is definitely a 70-75 highway
  • 580 is the best. Just love that road. You are right on this one.
  • 880 is a cluster. Besides there is no where worth going to along 880. :teeth

Rather than complaining about speeds, which are mostly regulated for state funding rather than safety, I want to see enforcement of lane discipline. People driving to slow in the fast lane puts everyone in danger and clogs the arteries of the highways.:afm199

You are connected. Why isn't the CHP, et al, enforcing speed laws, currently? I know they haven't enforced other issues for awhile, like following too close and signaling for a change of direction. But speeding is usually the easy one to cite and win. Aren't the concentrated highway sweeps successful in reducing speeding?

Well, I saw something a week or so ago that was pretty astonishing (to me). I commute from Santa Clara to Ukiah once a week (on Wednesdays).

As I was going through Novato on 101 in the #2 lane, cruise set at 75mph, I am passed by a car in the HOV lane going around 85mph (confirmed it later). On his/her butt was a CHP moto cop tailgating at less than a car length. Hovering around the DS tail light and moving over to the PS tail light and back and always at or less than one car length.

This went on for miles, driver seemed clueless. Finally, moto cop changes lanes to #2 and passes 85mph car and settles in behind another car going 85mph+.

But this is where it gets interesting. This continued into and through a construction zone with alternating lighted signs saying "55 MPH" "WILL BE ENFORCED". No change in speed or behavior. By this time I'm in southern Petaluma and begin losing site of this.

No hint of pulling anyone over for speeding and very dangerous tailgating. Nobody else adjusted their speed with the presence of the moto cop, they just went about their business.

Dan, I see that CHP moto do that all the time.
I'm guessing he's on his way to the bear den to punch in for his shift.

"In the last couple months, I'm seeing speeds closer to 85-90mph. If I go slower than 80, I find myself being tailgated and passed on the right."

I like that you edited my post before the comma. That's an interesting way to manipulate a statement. The words " If I go slower than 80mph" imply that I don't do that with any frequency.

You'd do well to read my whole post. We're of like mind, and in agreement regarding lane discipline. I even mention my right lane only experiences while driving my glacially slow 4 wheel vehicle.
Kind of a douchebag move, unless you're looking for humour, which was apparently not easily grasped.

Have had to drive a few times this month to San Jose and back. And doing 80 mph is contagious.

What killed me on the drives was watching a couple of riders doing 80 mph while lane sharing at night. :wow

Hwy 4 through The Delta is the Wild West. If you’re not doing 85mph you’re a road block.

No kidding, I hate driving or riding through there and generally avoid it. Watch for those cars that move 2-3 lanes at a time no signal and don't care if there is room....

Too much lean angle...
Yes, the roads are like LA's now and I've cut way back on riding motorcycles and bicycles around traffic or during night time. The battery on the Zero degraded so I slab back at 65 mph instead of 70 mph and it is scary.

This is what I have noticed. Not really higher speeds. Just more brazen driving. I haven't had to slow for a CHP unit in at least a year. They just don't seem to care. That is on the major freeways. They do seem interested up in the Santa Cruz mountains and other similar riding areas.

In 2002 my colleague mentioned if you do 80 on the freeway in Dallas you will be passed by a cop doing 90. Not sure what it is today.

I think cars are also just in general, getting faster.

You're average econobox has 225 tires on 17" rims now and whatever ~150-160 horsepower... my grandfathers Corolla SE had sway bars thicker than the ones on his BMW race Mini back in the day.

I think cars are enabling people to feel more comfortable at higher speeds.

I drive a little Toyota Pickup with no rear sway bar, worn steering but functioning suspension, and 195 75 14 tires, going over 80 on a grooved highway like 280 is interesting to say the least... even more so when its windy.

I usually stick at 65-70 in the slow lane and yes, I'm tailgated all the time... /shrug

Yeah ... that’s Fish.

:laughing

I don't think there was much of a complaint on my part. It's just something I perceive, and I was curious if others share my perception.
It's kind of a bummer that the CRF is a bit stressful to ride on the freeway, but aside from that, I have no real complaint.

We could ban all the Teslas, but that's a different thread.

Why would you ban teslas?

I read through this thread and felt depressed and anxious. Then I was on YouTube watching drivers in Russia proving that America is a great place to live and drive.

Man, I felt better after just 20 minutes of Russian dash cam video.

From my morning commute earlier in the week. Probably need to enlarge it to see the Tesla driving on the left shoulder and hit the impact attenuator barrels a few seconds in.

Not reason to ban 'em, but a reminder the "drivers" may not be driving.

Someday I'll start an "all the reasons I hate Tesla's" thread. We can talk about build quality, shitty employ treatment, hype, and the enthusiasts who put the cherry on top.
