Fork tool needed

Hey Barfers,

I pulled the forks off of my XR400 and just found that the damper holder tool that I just purchased is wrong. Does anyone have the correct tool, that I can borrow or buy? It is Motion Pro # 08-0223 and it is used on the XR250, XR400, XR650R and the DRZ. I live in Rohnert Park and am working in Los Gatos so I'm up and down the peninsula.

Thanks,

Tom

For most forks you do not need the damper rod holding tool.

You just need an impact wrench and an allen socket to unscrew the allen screw at the bottom of the forks. If the fork spring and cap is still installed, the fork spring provides enough "hold" on the damper rod for the impact wrench to remove the allen screw.

I hit mine with an electric impact wrench and it broke free, but it does not have the rpm to unscrew it. The whole assy. just spins. The XR400 uses a 19mm socket. I could make one out of a piece of tubing, but that is a PITA and I don't want to bugger anything up down there. I bummed that the tool I bought was incorrect. Thanks for the info!

Go pull a lug nut off your car, put it in a 19mm socket and tape it in place with electrical tape so about 1/2 the hex part of the lug nut is extending out of the socket.

Attach the socket to about 18" of extension and a ratchet.

Remove the fork cap and spring

Slide the whole socket/extension/lugnut assembly into the fork to engage the top of the damper rod.

Remove the allen bolt.

The damper has two slots in it 180 degrees apart -so it will not accept a lug nut. The bottom compression dampner valve is removed with a 19mm socket not an allen wrench. My forks are different than the ones you are thinking of. Thanks again.

Honda had to go do something different... just to make it difficult.

Why did you get the forks wet?

Issue resolved. We made one from a 1" piece of electrical conduit. I also ordered the correct unit from Motion Pro, but it won't be here for a week or so as they just moved from San Carlos to Loomis I was told.
