For you SPOT/InReach users

Huh. I have a Spot X, which I've never needed to use in an emergency (although I have used the check-in feature to let my wife know where I am).

Garmin takes over the world...

Yup the inreach is the best. I don't know if they have a newer Spot but before you press the SOS button on the spot when you are in deep$hit you are left wondering if help will be on the way. Press the SOS button on the inreach and an operator will assist in your rescue. Now it's even better!

Another update I got from Garmin is the plan prices are going up =/ inflation sigh...

I have rented a Spot back in my solo backpacking days. The tracking feature was nice. I never wanted to buy one because back then there was a expensive yearly subscription fee.

InReach has a $20 lifetime membership. Awesome.

When needed, I carry a PLB now, which is as dumb as it gets, but it's better than nothing. Now, PLB are not that much cheaper - its probably better go go with something else.

I don't know about a liftetime membership. They have two types of plans the freedom plan and subscription like the spot. The freedom plan you pay a yearly fee and when you use it you can purchase a subscription for a month and they have varying levels with different features like you get X amount of texts, unlimited preset messages, you have so many minutes between tracking points, etc... Then when you don't use it you just deactivate it and don't pay for subscriptions until you use it again.

The other type is just monthly subscription, I think it's cheaper but yeah you need to pay monthly.

Also we had a rider go down in Baja, you can use the Inreach like a satellite texting device. Mexico has really spotty cell reception so I was able to communicate with Cabrito Inreach to Inreach. You can also pair it with your phone and text that way also, basically turns your cellphone into a sat phone sorta.

The tracking feature is pretty nice, I left mine on when I was moving during the Trans America Trail

Wife had me get an InReach Mini so that when I head off into the vast unknown on my dirt bike she doesn't have to worry about ever seeing me again. It also gave me the the peace of mind heading off on a marginal trail that I used to avoid in wondering if I would be found before the buzzards finished me off. I know a long distance off road runner that uses one, the mini is super small but packed with features.

I have the InReach and bought it for use when I did the BDR last year. The satellite texting was great as I was able to check in on days where I hadn't had cell data at all. It was also useful when my buddy and I took separate routes thinking we'd meet up never crossed paths. I just texted him my location and sat tight till he showed up.

I started with a SPOT. Use it on a few tours and a couple of Mexican 1000 races. The SPOT was good for tracking but we got into an issue where 2 way comms would have made a big difference. Bought an InReach and feel much better about going into remote places.

Due to some of the places I ride, I stopped carrying the SPOT and bought a PLB. I feel more ‘comfortable’ with the PLB.....IF I need it.
