First accident...4 broken vertebra, dislocated hip, torn spleen and some stitches

Hey BARF,
After almost 3 years of riding, I got into my first accident on 1/11/15 @ 4:30pm on a residential street in Salinas.
Had the infamous "car turned in front of me" accident and had a fraction of a second to react, you guys weren't kidding.
Well i hit the car and immediately flipped in the air; while i came rightside up, i saw a parked SUV and realized i was going to smack into it...luckily i hit it ~30ft away, perfectly upside down against my back so i didn't break my neck or my spine severely.
It was very surreal because i was conscious the entire time, even gave my full statement to the police and patient feedback to the medics before getting onto the stretcher.
I am currently typing this on my hospital bed the night before i am discharged and this whole time I've been in this weird haze realizing that i should not have survived this.

Is this normal?

I love riding and it is my one true passion in life, however i am quitting riding on the road because i cannot put my SO in this sort of predicament again...although she supports me if i wanted to ride again.

Police determined at the scene that the other party was at fault.
I was wearing almost full gear at the time as well

Sorry to hear B.

Glad you are with us and your SO. Time may change your mind on riding so writing it off so quickly is not unusual. Being in an accident like that is surreal for sure.

Heal quickly and fully.

Hope you get better. :( I spent a long timerehabbing from a broken hip from a bicycle accident so know how much it can change how you approach things. Just make sure you stay on top of the PT since doing it now will pay off later.

glad to see you sitting up on the bed...shew!

well think about it; but I say if you still want to ride, enjoy the twisties & powersports riding, start doing trackdays when your all better.

No grandma's, no oil/antifreeze/gravel/road hazards/NO CARS/& you are in complete control at all times. The only thing you gotta watch for is other riders; pretty easily done. Consider it...I know several who quit street riding & now only race/trackday ride...

food for thought...

Glad you're healing up Binsea.

"Almost full gear"? What were you missing and would it have made a difference?

Thanks for all the support guys, it helps.
Track days and dirtbiking are hobbies i will be getting into in a few years after school, when finances will allow it.

Glad you're healing up Binsea.

Pauly, I was missing leather pants and riding boots. I was wearing kevlar jeans and tightly-laced high top basketball shoes. The only difference it would have made would've been is a knee that wouldn't need stitches. I'm ok with it though, because they had to cut my jeans off before loading me onto the stretcher and having that done with leather jeans would have been even worse with a dislocated hip.

Brother I feel for you. Had near the same accident over the holidays, dislocated hip, fractured femur, knee damage, groin damage. Same thoughts as well. Good luck, hope you heal fast.

Hey Binsea
I to had the same thing happen to me after almost 50 years of riding and several years road racing I had my T8 vertabrea crushed down to half its size in the front they tried to use a balloon to jack it up (unsuccessfully) then injected epoxy inside it I don't know if I could ride but I'm sure as hell going to try (it's been 2 years so far) I think as time goes by you will want to as for thinking you shouldn't have survived well there's some up there looking after you so you will learn to enjoy life more the pain you will learn to live with but don't let them put you on opiats for ever I lost around 2 inches in height and tell them to give you a Calif brace wear it when in pain best of luck

Also I've crashed at around 100 mph on track and walked away with sore neck and wound up on permanant disability from crash on street at around 15 mph
Lesson learned
Keep it on the track speed doesn't kill idiots in cars do

So slow it's criminal
Sorry to hear that brother! Wish you the best and hopefully you heal up soon.

To mirror what others have said, the track is the way to go. I don't really ride the streets at all anymore, and I don't miss it.
