Fire Lookouts?

I'm looking for some day ride destinations out of Sacramento for my DR650. Does anyone know of any fire lookout stations in the north bay (Lake County?) or the Sierra?

I see where you can rent them for a night and making reservations seems easy but finding the location isn't. Anyone ever stayed overnight at one of the lookouts? I'd like to do that next summer. For now, I just want to ride up to one and enjoy the views.

I've been to several but can't give exact locations. Mostly i've been to those in Mendo National forest, near Stoneyford/Fouts Springs. The big M roads lead right up to them. In Winter you can't ride to the top but now until Winter you are good to go. People do camp up there but you're on your own. Never seen anyone around in half dozen visits over the years.

The Sierra has them as well, don't know where.

Have fun!

Go over to Pashnit.com sign up and ask around - you will have decent replies, I'm sure as there are several riders whom have posted ride/photos reports on going to the lookout stations. Have fun & ride safe :ride :thumbup
I'm surprised there haven't been more responses here I know there are several riders who do these rides quite a bit.
Come-on guys & gals help the man out here. :teeth

I was foolish enough to ask during a three-day weekend. I would imagine there a quite a few people out riding the last few days.

The ones I know are not local to ba. You can find some by searching online. I found info on a restored historic no longer used one that way. I know farther north in the Klammath and Trinity areas there are a few. And still active. We will be hitting them next week. I keep all my old fs maps too. The older the better. Newer maps have many, many things left off now. I grab old maps and sports chalet, and rei whenever I can. I hate rei. I knew of some map store that had a closing awhile ago in san diego but I couldnt go. Those things are a seriously valuable resource. Good luck!

Pine Mt Lookout is pretty nice. It's in the Mendocino NF near Lake Pillsbury and the Penny Pines staging area at Middle Creek. It can be rented, too...

The abandoned Bald Mt Lookout at the end of the Bald Mt OHV trail down in the Sierra NF is pretty neat. It sits on top of a solid granite dome and the views are spectacular. Loads of fun getting there, too as the trail is really fun :thumbup

Oh yeah, I forgot about Shuteye Peak in the Sierra NF...

Again, a really fun 4WD trail to get there, and the views are pretty far-reaching. There was someone working (living?) there at the time so I don't know if it's for rent, but it's still worth going for the ride and views alone...

Dont forget Plumas NF. Over 4k miles of dirt and plenty of lookouts, not to mention the fact that you can ride all day without hitting a paved road and you might see one or two other people playing in the woods.

there's a fire lookout up in Kings Canyon Nat'l Park, but I'm not sure if you can ride in the nat'l parks or not...

:laughing That's pretty much what I said the first time I rode to the top of Bald Mt :thumbup That whole area is a paradise if you have a plated dirtbike.

I'm pretty sure he was saying that about you! :hail

:laughing I don't think so :blush

I'm nowhere near as spectacular as the scenery I've ridden through, unfortunately :ride

Hey, DogBoy, did you know there's an official Forest Fire Lookout Association?
While looking at their website I found a comprehensive list of lookouts. This ought to keep you busy for awhile :teeth
