Fire/dirt roads in the Bay Area?

Hi BARF,

I'm hoping to acquire a supermoto, and I'll be looking for some legal dirt roads/fire roads around the Bay, any suggestions?

Short answer, nothing super close, but you have some options.

There is a road called Buzzards Lagoon Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It's a few miles of dirt road that spit you out in Coralitos. You have to ride down Summit Road a ways. You can make a loop out of it also and head back to San Jose on Soquel San Jose. I took this nearly stock DR650 there couples months back and it was a blast.

Go to Carnegie OHV Park and ride all of the blue trails.

I did that on my XR650L a few years back and recorded it with my GPS. Took me two sessions to get to all of them.

This is the Google Earth view of all the trails I rode. Some of the stuff on the right near the top was closed at the time.

I would point you at an on-line map, but that seems to be out of order right now. They'll give you one when you enter the park.
