Fifty Bogus Reasons for Not Being a Registered Organ Donor

The possibility of exploitation isn't a good reason to deny someone compensation for good or services. If it was, then no one could sell anything.

Medical ethics boards have discussed this issue to death. Their conclusion does not agree with yours.

In addition, I bet most of you non-donors would gladly and hypocritically receive donor organs should the need arise...:rolleyes
I find your statement arrogant and offensive and childish. You don't know anything about me. Can you honestly suggest you know enough about the members here to made such a judgement?

I'm over 50.
I've worked in a variety of relatively unsafe occupations.
I've worked in a variety of relatively unsafe locations.
I've had guns and knives pointed at me and though me.
I can honestly say I do have some inkling of how I will comport myself in those moments when I die.

My choice is a personal decision made only for myself and only for my reasons. It reflects no judgement on the decisions made by others whatever they might be.

I decided I would not receive donated materiel long before I made any decision on whether or not to donate.

I can definitely understand peoples' desire to not be a donor, but I can say that it is sad taking someone off a ventilator and letting their body die, when it could be used to save/improve numerous other lives...

I think OP's heart is in the right place. As motorcyclists, we are more likely than anyone to become potential organ donors, so it's a good thing to think about.

Interesting stuff about the dot not mattering, Tyler. Never knew that.

Since the family can override my decision anyways, I will not opt to be an organ donor at the DMV. And in case there is nothing that can be done for me, and I would have to be taken off the ventilator and die, I trust my family will make the right decision for me. That way I can be an organ donor without worrying about being killed for my organs.

Organ donation? Me?

After all the laughter from all the girl friends I doubt that anyone would be open to accepting an organ donation from me...

But I signed the card anyway.

My dad has always said, "When I die, let them take what can be used to save lives, and burn the rest." I am an organ donor. My family are all PD and FD and so we're pretty realistic about death, and we all feel the same way about organ donation. That being said, if they take my lungs and put them in a smoker or my liver into an alcoholic, that sumbitch will never have another night's sleep again, 'cause I'll haunt him/her something fierce. The only thing that bothers me about donating is that I want my organs to go to someone who will take care of them, not someone who abused his/her own until it was worthless.

It always pissed me off when we worked so hard to save someone post-heart/lung transplant, only for one of us to run into that person standing outside 7/11 smoking like a freight train and gobbling down a chili dog. :mad

My understanding, is that the medical boards work very very hard to ensure that anyone who gets a lung/liver transplant has reformed their habits before receiving the transplant.

I think it's worth giving someone who's changed their ways a 2nd chance at life. I agree that I'd rather have it go to someone who didn't burn their own up, but if there's no one else in the queue, I'd rather it go to a recovered alcoholic than to waste.

Just throwing this out there, according to Milliken, if you have health insurance, the few thousand transplants paid for by private insurance cost covered members, adult and child, close to $100 a year each. Your health insurance bill goes up for your family by that much per person.

Discussing life and money in the same sentence is not acceptable to some people but the fact is people die every day for lack of money. Spend more on police and fire, ems, that would save lives yeah? Better equipment for our military, cancer screening, basic medications for poor people, even long term care for the elderly, fucking air conditioning in a heat wave, mental health, helmet laws, ABS, AIDS drugs, there are literally a million ways to spend money to save or improve a life and most of them turn out to be less costly than transplant surgery per year of life saved. Fewer transplants per year, more money to save lives somewhere else.

Sure we get touching testimonials from a couple people who know transplant recipients. Maybe you know someone who could have been saved by a colonoscopy or chest CT if they had insurance to cover it. Maybe if you kept your organs and sent $100 a year to the Cancer Society or Diabetes Association, that would do more good. If someone calls you a hypocrite for that, fuck 'em.

touch this testimonial, doc- all of the above and more could happen if we didn't do stupid shit like drop a trillion and a half every decade on war.

and just so you know, i donate well over a hundred bucks a year to medical causes and society can have my organs when i don't need them anymore.

here's a 'fuck 'em' scenario for ya-

say you're riding, and flip up your visor for a sec to say clear out some condensation from all the hot air coming out ya face and get hit square in the eyeball with a cuuuute lil bumble bee.

optometrist says, well, you're not gonna get your vision back without a corneal transplant, but thems is toooo expensive to society and there's a lack of donors 'cause of people like you spreading dubious info on the web....

ah..oh well. fuck 'em.

You'll have to pry my cold dead hands from my cold dead hands.

Since nobody else gave you props, bravo! :laughing

As for me, I'd be happy if the last thing I did in this life was help someone else. It would be a valuable lesson for my kids and potential give some stranger(s) another chance to hug their loved one or enjoy another day when I could not.

Should it be mandatory? No. Is it a selfish act to refuse something so simple? Yes, in my opinion.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been meaning to officially remove my pink dot at the DMV and I'll do it when I pay my registration.

If someone needs my organ I'd rather give it of my own free will now than let the hospital have it for free and charge the recipient for it later. Among many other reasons.

BTW, I have never actually seen anyone on FB or numerous forums I've participated on saying, "My cousin/sister/father/etc" needs a kidney blood type B-, if you are out there and are willing to help us with this life changing blah blah blah".

I have however seen numerous news articles about Dick Cheney's heart transplant and I would rather my heart rot in the dirt than be installed in THAT old fart (I can use more words that are not so nice but I won't get political). :twofinger
