Fallout 4

I've never played.
Is it an open map, do whatever you want, when you want type of game?

Yeap. That is if it follows the same Fallout 3 gameplay. There's usually one main quest and a gazillion side quests. You'd be on the way to complete one mission and 5 hours later not only have you not reached your destination, you've picked up another half-a-dozen side quests. Few, if any, of the quests are time sensitive, unless you end up killing (or they kill themselves) the NPCs that are required for that mission (then you're SOL).

And yea, open map for the most part, except some areas have ridiculously strong enemies to keep you away from it until later in the game when you're strong enough to tackle them.

The Fallout franchise is what the Far Cry franchise wants to be when it grows up.

Far Cry is an action/shooter game with RPG elements. Fallout is a full-on RPG that happens to be a shooter. Far Cry is fast-paced run and gun, Fallout is a slower-paced thinker then gun or not (sometimes shooting your way out of a situation does not pay off as well as non-violent options).

I enjoy Far Cry for the sheer mindlessness of it, I mean you pretty much shoot everything in that world (or get an elephant to kill everything for you). But Fallout is a lot more grown up and nuanced.

I might get the game but not at full price. I never finished New Vegas but I did finish Fallout 3 and it was addicting. Can it be more addicting than MechWarrior Online or StarCraft 3? Does Fallout have a competive mod?

There was a fast travel in Fallout 3. I hated using it because half the time you always get surprises waiting for you in the new location after you fast travel.

Looks like there's at least a jetpack and heli-pickup in Fallout 4.

I ordered the Collector's Edition from Amazon last night, I heard the Bethesda store was already sold out. There's only two franchises I would ever spend money on a collector's edition, the Fallout franchise and the Elder Scrolls franchise.

Here's the rest of their presentation from E3:

I was playing with it a bit this morning while getting ready for work. I gave it up in the middle of the tutorial because I had a feeling I was gonna get sucked in and be late for work playing the damn game. LOL

Pretty slick looking so far, and free. Did I mention I love Bethesda?

One of the guys at work ordered the Pip-Boy collectors editions and they are being delivered today. I have been amusing myself by sending him IMs telling him the various ways that his collector editions will be waylaid or mauled before he gets his hands on them. I especially liked the feral pack of ChihPoos getting their paws on the box after UPS leaves it on the front porch.

Enjoy the time Alan.

It must be goooooood given your anticipation.

:laughing

It's hard to explain man, but there's only two game franchises (Fallout and Elder Scrolls) that I live for. As in if I died early I would regret leaving my dog behind, and regret being unable to play the next game in the franchise.

You're an evil man.

Just got the text notification that UPS dropped the game off, immediately called my neighbor to come grab it from the porch before some thieving bastard runs off with it.

do i need to play the previous games to enjoy, or can i just jump right into it?

You can jump straight in. This takes place in a different region (Boston) from the other games in the franchise (California, DC, and Nevada respectively). You'll be missing out on a few inside jokes, some references, but nothing that would ruin the game for you.

You can read something like this to get a background on why the Fallout world is the way it is but I don't think it necessary at all. I'm sure you would enjoy it just as much jumping in there blind.
