Ebbetts pass is calling

Just returned, road is squeaky clean, lakes are full to the brim, everything pristine, green growth on sides of road, isn't high yet, so sightlines are uncompromised....Week days Rock...Hardly anyone is there, on week days.

Lakes full to the brim are a surprise -- although Crystal Springs Lake here south of SF is full to the brim as well.

I did sonora pass and Tioga today. Sonora is a treat! Tioga was meh...The low speed limits in YNP takes out all the fun. I encountered a bambi on tioga. The bambi saved me from a ticket :). The slowing down for bambi was followed by a cop coming the other way.

I should have returned through Ebbets instead of Tioga. Next Monday I do Ebbets!

Looked it up on the map, looks like fun. I can probably make a good 2 day one night trip over there

You'll should try Sonora pass then 395 to Bristle cone pines and then camp, the next day ride up, the road is loose DG but the view is worth it!

Surprised me to the Amazed, or knee buckle stage. Didn't think it would be possible, from what I'd seen earlier, when Icy/snow covered most of the lakes.

And the dramatic difference in the pictures posted here, that were taken two weeks ago, And SFSV650's picture from Tioga two days ago....:wow....This place has come to life. :thumbup

Useful idiot
I really need to get back up there for a bit of play time. Some of the best riding in the state, for sure. :thumbup

I think Lou posts these updates so that the LEOs up there have someone to pick off on the weekends. Meanwhile he's out cruising during the week without a car, moto or cop in sight.

Ya think wrong. :rofl

Have You ridden Ebbetts?

It is the longest stretch of awesome, crossing the crest of the Sierra range.

There are places on Hwy 4, that the CHP can be at,
But the only CHP I've seen up on Ebbetts, was One time when a big rig truck driver had ignored the "not advised" sign, Preferred the advice of his GPS routing that said hwy 4 was his shortest route, got to a switchback turn that he couldn't make and couldn't back up.

The CHP and a big rig tow truck took over.

I hype Ebbetts and doing it on Week days...Because I like prodding riders to do something they can love doing.

Weekends are still nice stuff, but there are weekenders visiting then.
Having the road to yourself, is much much nicer.

To love that road, requires a rider that is at ease. with the challenge though.
That might require a few trips, getting more used to it...
What a horrible task to take on...:rofl

I've not ridden anywhere in the Sierras yet and won't be until I fix the subpar suspension on my new acquisition, my Street Triple.

Hopefully I can sort that in the next month or so and be out there before the end of summer.

Virtually no enforcement that I could see up there, certainly not on the pass itself...but I was there on weekdays.

Be sure to do it both ways incorporating Monitor Pass and others in big loops.

Lou is right. I have ridden Ebbetts a few time before and rode Sonora pass the first time yesterday( have driven through there a few time before).

From a relatively inexperienced riders perspective:

Law enforcement is scarce there. I also think it takes a better than average rider to go much over 55mph on the good sections. If it's your first time on these passes take it easy and you better be looking up and on your toes the whole time. If you do so , it's so rewarding. Stop as many times as you want and soak in the scenery and take pictures. Most of the drivers there on weekdays seem to be locals. They are either doing a decent clip or are quick to let you by. Rarely you come across a tourist that won't let you by on weekdays. When that happens I either stop and take break. Or turn around and ride 5 minutes and then turn around again. No point in tailgating an unpredictable driver and compromising your sight line.

Lot's of nice places to camp there and do a multi-day ride around the passes.

Don't out ride your sight-lines there, ever. Expect some ass-hat to be stopped in the middle of the road talking pictures around a blind corner; Or gravel from folks pulling over on the soft shoulder and getting back on. Some sections are prone to rock slides etc.

So Hwy 4 is open all the way over? Great news. I'd heard the gate was closed just last week.
