Ducati Black Key Duplicates

Not getting a lot of traction in Garage, figured I'd ask here...

I just bought an 1199s and it came with a single black key. Want to get a duplicate because having just one + my stupid ass is asking for trouble.

It looks like you need to have the code cloned from previous black key to new one. What's the cheapest way to do this without getting ripped off from Ducati?

Looking for 1) reputable places to buy blanks and then a local locksmith, or 2) suggestions for a place that does all of it online that isn't a scam

I just went to Rex lock and key (who are otherwise amazing) and they had no clue. I haven't been able to find a blank with an empty chip on ebay either.

A lot of information on the Ducati site. Do a search there but I remember reading buying a flob and programing was near $200. Not cheap but if you do not have the RED key to make one might be worth getting a backup.

thanks, good to have a reliable forum site. Ducati did away with the red key / black key thing for the Panigale according to there.... Apparently they just come with two black keys from the dealer.

Question remains though, have any of you had luck getting a key replacement done somewhere else or just went thru the dealer ?

The Oregon place is SOS Diagnostics. they are spot handy when you need to get a dash/ECU replacement when the immobilized is in the dash. They also have good info on their site about what models need reprogramming. Call Rob at Meteor Motorbikes. Pretty sure anybody with a Texa can reprogram a cut key if you get your chipped key cut.

Thanks Lucy I was just going to message you. I went to my local reputable locksmith (Rex) who does auto and they said they had no idea how to handle this key so I'm at a bit of a loss.

I'll call Rob tomorrow, just trying to get this done locally if possible otherwise I'm out the bike for a week+ and risk of losing the package. I would start calling around for programming (good tip for the Texa) but can't even find a blank online anywhere.

I bought an extra key for my '08 hyper, 3 total of black key system.

Any good key cutter will do the job on the blank, but the bikes computer would only hold two keys programmed at one time.

You might be able to get a blank at Lockworld. Otherwise, get the blank from Munroe

thx!! i also have heard of attaching the chipped key to the bike permanently and physically using a copied key without the chip

Rob was really nice but said he can clone it, but can't cut and can't get a blank.
SOS said they will do a mail in clone and cut for $75 but it's not Ducati branded (whatever).

I'll try Lockworld and see if I can find one there today, if not I give up and I'll just live with the shipping risk and send to SOS.

So for anyone else who comes across this thread - since I've read now like ten different dead threads on the Ducati forums - you need to buy a blank from dealer, get it laser cut (locally at lockworld) then bring back to dealer for programming. $70 for blank. $35 for cut. $55 for programming to immobilizer.

SOS claims they can clone and cut the key for $75 to a non oem blank, plus shipping both ways. Munroe told me that it needs to be programmed to the bike so copies are impossible, not sure who to believe. I'm inclined to keep the key in my hands and not risk the $3000 bill if key is lost but regardless, that's the gist

so i'm dense. SOS can do it but not ideal
can anyone locally do it?

Yup, by the process I outlined above - get a ducati blank from dealer, cut at a place that will do a laser cut (which is pretty uncommon), then get anyone with a trak system (desmoto, meteor motorbikes, munroe, etc) to code the key to the bike.

SOS was pretty confident they can do it - inclined to believe them but really don't want to ship my only key, I have the worst luck with that sort of thing
