Dear electrical engineers,

Riddle me this.

2007 DRZ400 SM.

One day online I buy a digital gear indicator on sale from Moto-D, then it sat on my bench forever. Looks like a Datatool clone. It has five wires.

Switched+12v
Ground
Button
Tach
Speedo

4/5 of these are straightforward.

Switched+12 to dashboard switched power.
Ground to dash ground.
Button clicks to ground for programming it.
Tach to white wire on coil.

Speedo. Hmm.

Today, idle hands and coffee, I say to myself the speed shows digits, so the dash must contain an A/D converter. Sure enough, I open it, the speedo cable ends with a spinny wheel with holes, near a sensor with three wires coming out of it, red white black.

Speedo to white.

Cue cutting routing stripping crimping and soldering.

Doesn't work. Throws error code that it can't read the speedo.

Guess I'll check my connections.

Or throw in some resistors?

Or go ride the thing, it rides great, why are you doing this?
