DRZ 400 filter/o-ring question

If I pull the filter, do I need to drain the oil first, or can I get away with only pulling the filter?

(Backstory: First oil change under my watch, found it was missing the little O-ring behind the filter. Finished oil change as it was and ordered parts.)

(edit: I guess I could lie the bike on its left side)

There's a separate/dedicated drain bolt for the filter housing. Dunno if this is to facilitate separate intervals for oil vs filter, or inherent to dry sump design... but it's there.
